cat can't keep food down

We have a 14+ year old tom who is now on thyroid tablets which are costing a £1 a day and can hardly afford it. After we have fed him we always seem to find a pile of vomit in the garden with the tablet in. We have to fish it out and wash it down and give it him again clean. When we feed the tablet we have to give it him inside a small piece of beef otherwise it's impossible to get it down him.

What could be wrong with him ? All the time we have had him he has always been prone to being sick now and again but now it gets worse. He has the same food and we vary the dried we mix with it which is all quality. We must have lost so many tabs over the last few months without knowing. It's very frustrating.

I would take your cat to the vet and explain the problems you're having. It could be there's something else wrong with the poor chap.

Re: cat can't keep food down

It's so frustrating. Told the vet when she did another blood test on him to see if he needed to stay on Thyroid tabs. £59 for test and £58 for 2 months of tabs. What a ripp off. Told her about vomiting but didn't see anything wrong with him.

I now feed him much earlier than when we give him the tab to make sure he isn't sick straight away. Tonight he really made me cross. After a couple of hours of feeding and outside I let him in, give him the tab in a piece of meat and he bought the whole lot up in the house. he always manages to get it across a few different things at the same time. Stairs, bedroom carpet, hall carpet just to make like more difficult.

Why on earth does he do this ?

Re: cat can't keep food down

Is he on Vidalta tablets? The regurgitating soon after eating suggests to me he's developed a food allergy either to the tablet coating or the meat it's given with.

I would firstly try giving them with a different food eg cheese. Failing that I would ring the vet and explain the problems you're having, since it's vital he has these tables. Otherwise he could become dangerously ill.

I would also discuss having the thyroidectomy operation with your vet.

It's not the tabs making him sick. he has been sick on and off for years.

Re: cat can't keep food down

If this is the case then the vet needs to investigate the reasons why. He could well have something simple like a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease ( both easily treated with diet change ) for example. It will only get worse if left untreated.

What are you currently feeding him? Food with grains are notorious for causing these symptoms so maybe a switch to a grainless diet would help.

Re: cat can't keep food down

Even if he doesn't have food he manages to bring up something in the night like a hairball. Going to the vets is costed us a fortune so far and having yet another problem to investigate is going to cost too much for us I am afraid. It's already £30 a month just for the tabs which is why it's so frustrating. The tabs are Vidalta.

Re: cat can't keep food down

Sounds to me to say the very least his current diet is probably the cause of the problems. What are you currently feeding him? Does it have grains for instance?

You can always just call the vets and ask their advice.

Re: cat can't keep food down

No, been on the same cat food for years. Anyway, he does it in the early hours and it's always a hair ball. We never feed him late at night.

Give him the tab inside a small piece of beef or ham and most mornings it's on the floor again with a hair ball. Odd times it isn't. One thing is for sure, it's costing a fortune for us. Why oh why is this happening !

Re: cat can't keep food down

Very unusual for a cat to be producing this many hairballs. Is he longhaired? You could try grooming him more to limit the amount of fur he ingests.

Otherwise I'd still suspect the food.
