Question Raw chicken wing - are they old enough?

Our kittens are now 16 weeks old and have put on a good amount of weight in the couple of weeks they've been with us. They are now eating a rotation of Grau, Lily's Kitchen, Animonda Carny and Darling's raw food.

We bought some chicken wings at the supermarket today and I was wondering if it's okay to give them as a treat or are they too young?

They've had no problems with changing foods and seemed to take to the raw food quite quickly so do you envisage me having much trouble getting them to eat a raw chicken wing? Would it be best to start with cut up pieces of raw chicken first?

Nope go for it

You *might* have to cut into the skin a little to expose the meat underneath in case they don't get the food in front of them...

Have fun! If you have some old towels/sheets I'd advise you to throw a few down as they will probably drag it about a bit first.

My girls were a little bit younger than your two when they had their first one. It was fun fun fun

Be prepared to find half gnawed chicken wings hidden under furniture or lurking where you are most likely to put a bare foot
I hope they enjoy their chicken wings - mine do

Re: Raw chicken wing - are they old enough?

Good luck with it - I am sure they will love it

My two have been fine with any foods they have been given but just didn't seem to enjoy scrambled egg or raw chicken meat. I had cut it into small pieces but they kind of played around and tried it but then left it and I had to throw it away.

I thought I would wait a bit till they are older and then try with the wings instead, (my old cat used to love that, and neck) but for now they are happy with the other stuff.

Kittens eh? Never know what's best for them!

Not really though I do understand your concern. I feed raw chicken wings among other things and I would probably not be too happy if the cats were dragging it around to areas which couldn't be easily cleaned. Mine only ever have their food in hard floor areas so not a problem. The other thing to bear in mind is that the risks of cross contamination tend to be highest where raw food (or it's residue) can come into contact with cooked food. Unless you are into carving a joint or preparing salad on the floor where the cats have been feeding then it's not likely to be a health risk. Most raw feeding fans are probably far more clued up than average on kitchen hygiene.

Re: Raw chicken wing - are they old enough?

Thanks everyone!

Well... the raw chicken wings got a mixed reaction.

Both kittens treated the wings with suspicion at first, but Monty soon realised it was food and started chomping on it, whilst growling. He ate quite a bit of the hard bony pointy bit of the wing and it was kind of fascinating listening to him crunching on the bone, especially considering he's never had anything like it before! He ate quite a bit of the skin and the meat before ultimately wandering off. Good first attempt.

Dinah, on the other hand, stared at hers and sniffed it for a good few minutes, before starting to throw it around the room. She kept trying to drag it away and then started "dancing" around it (standing on back paws and waving her front paws in the air above it). She didn't seem to realise it was food, and only nibbled at the outer bits of skin at first, before we cut it open a little bit and she managed to eat some of the meat. She gnawed on the bone for a while but seemed happier just to throw it around. When they both got bored, we decided to call it a day.

I fed them on a large old tablecloth which is about the size of the main bit of floor in the kitchen, so there was minimal mess and I just threw the tablecloth straight in the washing machine afterwards! Dinah did manage to throw her chicken wing onto the main bit of floor quite a few times though. I was wondering if anyone can recommend some antibacterial wipes or something that are safe for animals?

They didn't eat quite as much of the chicken as I expected, and I wondered if it should be warmed up, or just at room temperature, when feeding? Or straight from the fridge - what would be best? I think the wings might've been a bit cold as they weren't long out of the fridge so will maybe try leaving them out for a while longer next time.

Re: Raw chicken wing - are they old enough?

Hun that sounds like a perfect start to me Give it time, they will eat more and more at each sitting

Still picturing Dinah chucking it around! Rilly my 3 year old still does this with her wings and also her freeze dried chicken It's hilarious to watch sometimes!
