Aww, I'm sorry, but don't beat yourself up. Cats can have a hereditary disease called polycystic kidney disease, and this sounds like what your babe had. They are born with it and there's absolutely nothing you can do. Certain breeds are susceptible to it and breeders now screen for it. That's the only way it can be controlled, by only breeding non-carriers with non-carriers.
