New Kitten.

Hi guys.

My kitten is 7 weeks old. On Friday we took him to the vets where he was diagnosed with ear mites and I have been putting the drops in 2 times a day as stated. The vets also gave me 3 syringes with worming medicine in it. I think its Perecur? Or something similar.

Since Ive been giving my cat the wormer and ear drops it has been crying none stop. Its seems constantly hungry and scoffs his food down like he hasnt seen it before. He is using his tray and going to the toilet fine. His crying is pretty horrible, he seems fed up- as you would be. Why do you think he is crying so much?

Having a nightmare really. Bought him off a man who is yet to send the certificates and insurance information. Was told that the kitten was a girl and was 8 weeks old when I bought it- Last wednesday. Took the kitten to the vets to find she was a he and is only 7 weeks old. Let down to say the least. Just want him to be alright. Any suggestions would be great!

Re: New Kitten.

What certificates and insurance are you talking about? There is no reason you shouldnt have been given those things at the time you got the kitten, that is UNLESS there arent going to be any

Personally I would take out your own insurance, the insurance you get from breeders tends to be the free trials from companies such as PetPlan so just get your own.

Honestly it sounds like you have bought from a BYB. No proper breeder would sell a kitten at 8 weeks, and certainly would not lie about it. 8 weeks is too young to be leaving home as it is.

He is probably lonely or missing his mum and littermates. My kitten cried when I brought him home at 14 weeks and he had had twice as long to get socialised. If he has worms it will make him hungrier but kittens food should not be limited. Make sure you can transfer him onto a high quality wet diet as well, gradually, to make sure he is getting ample nutrition as most kittens at this point will still be suckling alongside food.

Is the certificate you mean some sort of pedigree thing or insurance related?

Just found you post stating is is a Persian/Exotic. That is my breed and honestly it sounds like you have bought from a BYB. I hope you did not pay very much for this kitten as it hasnt been vaccinated and is probably not pedigree. No reputable, proper, registered pedigree breeder would give you a 7 week old kitten. They also know how to sex kittens and would not let a kitten go with earmites.

This is shocking

Re: New Kitten.

The man I bought it off said that he had a 4 week insurance plan and that they would contact me to ask if I wanted to carry on with the plan. The certificate is for pedigree. Im not sure what really happens as only had non pedigree cats. He said I would recieve the information in 10 days, which is today. Im going to wait till Tuesday and give him a ring.

My kitten also has bad dry skin on his head and ears and the skin is clumping.

Also, what is a BYB? I paid £200 for him.

Re: New Kitten.

A back yard breeder. Breeding purely for profit and not to better the breed.

Sorry honey but this cat is not pedigree. It may be a cross breed, or it is a breeding of unregistered parents. They wont have been health tested.

No breeder who follows the proper procedures would dream of letting a kitten go before 12 weeks. 7 weeks is ridiculous.

The reason you dont have the certificates is probably because you never will. The kitten wont be registered because the parents won't be active (ie allowed to breed and be registered) I also got the 4 weeks free insurance, but I got a letter with all the details on. He probably doesnt have it as you cannot get it until 6 weeks, and he was selling off the kitten at 7...

You paid a lot of money, but a pedigree exotic (or persian, I am not sure which one you think he is, looks more long haired in your pics) is around £350-400, not £200. This is why he was so cheap

All pedigree breeders vaccinate before the kittens leave. You will need to organise this yourself at 9 and 12 weeks. By the time you pay for these you may as well have paid the extra money for a proper registered pedigree

I would be surprised if you can contact this man again.

He has sold you a non registered, probably cross breed kitten with no papers, in very poor health, and unvaccinated. He has sold it 6 weeks too young, with earmites. He is a con man, taking your money and putting nothing into the animals or the breeding

Re: New Kitten.

Have you spoke to the vet about the bad skin and 'clumping' I am not even sure what that clumping could be...

Re: New Kitten.

To be honest, i'm not upset it isnt a pedigree. I love him regardless. I am upset that the seller has sold me him too young and in poor health, but then again im glad I have him rather than it be with the seller.

I think he is more of a persian than an exotic. I went to the vets on Friday intending to get the vaccinations done only to be told that he was 7 weeks old. Ive booked an appointment for 2 weeks time to get them done and by then hopefully the earmites will have cleared up.

Cant believe someone that deals with cats for a living could be such a greedy, thoughtless person.

Do you think the dry skin is from his food or ear mites? His skin was a little dry when we went to the vets, so she did a test for ringworm and we're waiting the results, but it seems to be getting worse with the ear drops for the mites I tried him on Felix kitten but he didnt really think much of it. If I was to change him off the food hes on now, do I mix the new with the old for a week or so?

Thanks alot for your help, really appreciate it.

Re: New Kitten.

They just want money, thats all. There is no money in pedigree breeding, despite the high price tag. The money that goes into health/DNA testing, vaccinations, check ups during pregnancy, food, litter, etc, most breeders make a loss. Unless you choose to not do it properly.

What was he eating at the breeder? He needs to stay on that for now, so if he wasnt eating Felix dont give him that. Honestly Felix is crap, as is whiskas and 99% of what you can get in a supermarket.

I feed brands from zooplus.com, I feed animonda carny and bozita alongside some raw mince from Natural Instinct. Free shipping over £19

When you decide what you want to feed (a-z at the top of this page, stickied, is a fab place to start looking at different foods. You want to be look at a wet food with over 70% meat in my opinion. You also do not need to feed a 'kitten' food as that limits your choice and is not at all necessary. then you need to change over the food gradually by mixing it in with his old food.

If he has any persian in him (does look like a persian cross to me in his face) he may get big so I would feed him as much as he wants for the first years. My boys are huge and until recently were eating around 400g a day of wet food. Dry is a bit pants

Honeslty I don't have much experience with dry skin but a better food will help him all round. I imagine it could be the mites if its mainly around the top of his head... if it doesnt clear up with the ear mite meds, see what the vet thinks.

Re: New Kitten.

Hi there, welcome to PF ! You've come to the best place for help and advice (excepting your vets of course!!) for you and your new kitty.

Please take a look at the information about food that our resident food guru, Hobbs, put together for us "slaves" understand cat food and it's contents/benefits to our precious kitties. This is the link :
A-Z of wet food for cats

One thing to make sure you don't give your kitten is cows milk, as much as this seems a natural thing to do, cats do not tolerate the lactose in cows milk at all.....

Good luck with him, as as with all new arrivals around here, if you could post some photos of your new charge, we would lurvvvvvvvve to see him

Re: New Kitten.

He was eating Morrisons own brand at the 'breeders'. I dont think he was getting enough nutrients from this though. I'll for deffo check out that thread though.

How will I know what breed he is now? I think he has got some persian in him. Ill post some pictures. Thanks again for your help.

Lil Dee- Thanks for your warm welcome. The 'breeder' did actually mention cats not tolerating cows milk. So he got something right!

I agree with you on the Morrisons food but if you switch too quickly it could upset his tum, give him the runs, and youll be faced with the same problem PLUS poo :P

Without papers he is just a moggy/crossbreed, but I can definitely see some persian in his face. Did you not see his mum? I know sometimes breeders use outside studs so dad is not always available, but mum should have been there...
