Spaying

I am keen to get my girls done as soon as I possibly can as there is a ginger tom that is always lurking round and I don't want them to accidentally get out and for him to get at them. It is like Fort Knox at the moment keeping them in as they are REALLY keen to get outdoors, but they are just too young at the moment.

How early can they be done? they are 19 weeks old today and each weigh 2.4kg.

Also what is the recovery process - I am a bit daunted by the thought of trying to keep them from running about & jumping.

Thanks

Re: Spaying

I had my male cats done at 14 & 15 weeks. It was what the vets suggested when we went in for their jabs.

I can't recall the recovery time for girls, as it was a long time since i've had a female, but i don't think it affects them too much. You don't need to keep them subdued or anything.

Your best course of action is to speak to your vet. Some will spay early some preferr to wait until 6months.It is possible to have kittens neutered quite early but some vets are not keen to do it.Even once they are spayed it is not really a good idea for them to be out unsupervised until they are better equiped to fend for themselves at least 9 months, older if possible.

Re: Spaying

As Buffie says, some vets will spay earlier than others, worth while calling round a few to check. At the same time ask what kind of sutures the cat will have....newer surgical techniques seem to need a very small incision, closed with internal stitches which need no aftercare/removal visit to vets and more importantly no buster collar!

Re: Spaying

As others have said, best to ask your vet! Recovery time is fairly quick but all cats react differently to general anaesthetic, singer come round really quickly others it takes longer for but is more often than not not a reason to worry Did you get my pm about the foods?

Re: Spaying

Ari had it done when she was 6 mths and 3.5kg. I had an oophorectomy myself so I was very sorry and worried about her. But she was great. I mean, really GREAT.

She was hungry when came home but she didn't poop for the first day. After that it was all normal.

We didn't let her jump on things but she didn't have much wish to do so. She didn't wear a elizabethan collar and every time she tried to pull the stitches I said 'no-no', so she learned not to do that. She was grooming herself a lot because she was looking 'dirty' (I had the same strange greasiness when I woke up from my surgeries, so I suppose it's normal). The healing was really fast and good. It was a bit lumpy under the cut but it's because of the cicatrisation process happening underneath. Just watch out for things oozing out, specially if it's not transparent or if it's smelly.

After a week I removed the stitches myself (I have a sterilised suture scissors and tweezers kit at home for emergencies) because I thought it would be less stressful for her than the trip to the vet. And she was as good as gold again. So proud of her!

Her fur grew back very fast. Sometimes I look at an old picture from when she had the shaving mark and I get surprised because that time passed so fast and smoothly!

Re: Spaying

The MC I have just put a deposit down on today will be spayed at 12 weeks. I'd never heard of it being done at such a young age before!

I've noticed a lot of breeders are doing this now. The breeding of non active pedigrees is obviously getting worse, or more places are doing pediatric neuters. I have seen a few ragdolls breeders doing the same.
