What wet food are you trying?? One that I have found that is good with Oscar is RC Instinctive - i'm not sure whether it smells a bit stronger than some cat foods but he loves the stuff.

I am quite lucky with Oscar as he will almost eat anything He has something different at each meal time so it keeps his interest up.

I do have some Cosma Snackies which are freezed dried pieces of chicken. Oscar won't touch them but I'd be happy to send them to you if you want to try
Hi Jayne
Im trying Archie on whiskas senior, science plan ( its like paste and he will lick this) and a couple of the fancy small tins but he turns his nose up at them
At the moment he is having very small amounts of the RC dried but i desperatley want to wean him of as quickly as possible,
It is much easier if you dont have a fussy cat im sure..
I have 5 cats and all the others love their wet food!

Hi Sharon

Try these - these are similar to Thrive but you can feed them wet or dry (mine adore them dry) - there are no additives or preservatives in them. They work out slightly cheaper than the Thrive. Do them in Prawn, Chicken, White Fish or Tuna.

Re: cats with crf

My Tigger has been diagnosed with CRF. He is nearly 20 years old and this has explained his very gradual weight loss overt he last few years. Originally we thought it was more to do with muscle wastage due to his now sedentary lifestyle! The vet originally said to feed him higher quality protein, and basically anything else he likes due to his age. So I was feeding him a combination of Encore (which he loves), dry senior biscuits and senior Felix.

Anyway over the last 6 months his thirst has increased so he had a blood and urine test two weeks ago. Since then he has been on a medication (1 pill per day, I forget the name but think it begins with t...). He is due to finish that course tomorrow and will have a urine test again. I was advised not to feed any more Encore due to the high protein content. So I went to straight senior Felix and he would hardly eat any for the first 4 days of the pills, was even reluctant to eat a cat of encore when I tried that (eating something is better than nothing). He is totally disinterested in biscuits of any kind so I don't bother putting any out for him. I have since tried the new Tesco Nature food and he seems to like them. But I am aware of the fact that he gets bored with the same brand - will eat one brand for a few weeks and then goes off it but will start liking another brand. He's been like that all his life.

So, I'm not sure if I'm feeding him correctly. Since he has been on the tablets his weight has now come back up. But over the last week he has been getting quite constipated, and he gets frustrated in the litter tray and squats along the floor. So when I get up in the morning I have been finding surprises here and there. It's obvious he has been wiping his bum across the floor to try and help. He has always been a very clean cat before so I think this must be distressing him a little too.

I appreciate that with his age there isn't much that can be done. I just want to be able to manage his symptoms as best as possible and make him comfortable. For example I don't want to feed a special diet that he will probably hate, I would much rather he really enjoys his food as it is his main motivation in life now!

We'll see how his urine test goes tomorrow anyway.

Is it the Fortekor?

In regards to wiping his bum across the floor and straining, he could be in discomfort from backed up anal glands which is somewhat common in older cats. He would try and wipe his bum across the floor and ebcause he is in discomfort, he may be getting constipated. It would be of worth asking your vet to have a look at them tomorrow!

Re: cats with crf

a new product launched today in the US called RenAvast. Three of my cats were in the original two-year clinical study. All three of my cats kidney values improved! You can check out the web site.

Hi Jane and welcome

I've been looking into RenAvast as have them members of the feline crf group I belong to. Although the anecdotal results look promising, what's worrying us is the lack of credentials of the author of the paper that is available concerning this product. Many questions remain unanswered. Who is Dr Archer? What are his veterinary qualifications? Background? What's a biomolecule? What's photo research? Thing is, without knowing exactly what this new substance consists of, it's hard to trust it. I see it's sold as a supplement, rather than a pharmaceutical. Not always a bad thing, but it doesn't that mean that patents don't need to be applied for?
I would rather wait a bit and see what transpires with this product before trying it on my cat, unfortunately. Good luck with it because if it works like you say, it's fantastic news for crf cats.

CRF cats are quite prone to constipation. A teaspoon of liquid paraffin in the food usually does the trick. They use canned pumpkin in the US to treat constipation, but I've never seen it here in Italy. We have fresh pumpkin, but I can't see Misi being up for that! You might have more luck in the UK. Liquid paraffin works though

Good luck with the tests today

Re: cats with crf

Well, I obviously missed the opportunity to get a urine sample today. He should use the litter tray overnight though and I'll drop it off in the morning. He seems to be over the bout of constipation, and has been quite good over the last few days. Just been very clingy.

Also today I have noticed a few scabs on his skin around his neck/scruff region. I'll be asking about it at the vets but could this be a symptom of the crf/dehydration?

Re: cats with crf

Misi:

I am not the one responsible for making the marketing decisions for RenAvast. I know that vets are being notified but as you can imagine, it takes time. There are already numerous vets in the US recommending it to their patients. The company wanted cat parents to be able to get the product everywhere not just from their vets. If you google me or even go to my personal web site janegarrison.com you will better understand why I am everywhere on the internet talking about RenAvast. I am a HUGE animal advocate. I spent 7 weeks in New Orleans rescuing animals after Hurricane Katrina and put out $100,000 of my own money to help with that effort. I run the largest pet food bank in the US supplying over 500 rescue groups and shelters with cat and dog food. Essentially I have dedicated my life to helping animals. RenAvast saved three of my cats and many of my friends cats so of course I want everyone to know about it. All I care about is helping animals.
As far as what is in RenAvast it is a proprietary blend of amino acids and peptides. Will the company give out their formula? Of course not... the same way Coke will not give out its formula. As far as the research goes, most supplement companies are not backed by any science or research. RenAvast has a two year study with blood work for every cat in the study. I looked at every single cat's blood work before I would lend my name to RenAvast. The company's stat of 89.9% of cats either had improvement or no further deterioration is 100% accurate. All new products are always met with discussion, questions and a bit of skepticism. With so many cats suffering from CRF and so many cat parents devastated by losing their cats...I feel very compelled to continue to lend my name and support to RenAvast. I do not want people to look back and say "shoot...I should have at least tried RenAvast". I have lost animals in the past and regretted decisions I made...THAT is a terrible feeling. I hope this clears up any concerns or questions you have. I am always open to any discussions regarding anything animal related.
