Ear mites

Paddy has been scratching a fair bit the last week or so, so I bit the bullet and gave him a dose of Advocate 3 days ago. It is not something I use a lot I have to say. He is still having the odd scratch 3 days later and I have noticed that his ears are pretty gunky. I have gently cleaned them out with damp cotton wool a couple of times already. I have done this a few times before in the past and always thought it was just him being a messy boy who likes to take garden dust baths, combined with having white ears which show the dirt.
Could it be ear mites? If so, will the single dose of Advocate be enough to deal with it or should I be getting some drops from the vet?

Re: Ear mites

If he had ear mites I would have expected him to be shaking his head and scratching his ears a lot- I think you'd know! At any rate the Advocate should deal with it.

Gunky ears-minus the itching can have other causes as well-fungal or bacterial infection being one, especially if it smells and even food allergy another! However some cats just do produce more wax than others which you can just clean out occasionally. You can get drops from the vets for this though can't remember the name of the ones I used a few years back.
