Re: Weight Gain

Bonnie, I would say it sounds like a good weight gain!

When we brought Keiko, Ciara and Columbus, they were

Keiko (13 weeks 1 day) = 1.1 kg
Ciara (13 weeks 1 day) = 1 kg
Columbus (12 weeks 5 days) = 1.75kg

And now they are:

Keiko (16 weeks 1 day) = 1.6 kg
Ciara (16 weeks 1 day) = 1.5 kg
Columbus (14 weeks 5 days) = 2.05 kg

They eat so much raw, wet and dry a day and they look great too!

What do you mean?

The weights you just mentioned for your 16 week olds is perfectly normal and the higher weight is better than good.

The breeder should know that under 1.2kg is too light, she/he shouldn't need to even check with a vet Have you contacted the breeder to let them know how concerning their weight was?

I'm glad they have you now I'm sure they will continue to thrive in your care
I know, I'm shocked now looking back at the early photos of them, and remembering how I could feel every single bump along their spines. Yep I did raise it with the breeder and she said that the vet didn't raise any concerns re: their weight and she wouldn't have let them leave if they were underweight. So I really don't know... I think it was simply a case of them not getting enough to eat as I know that 1 x 100g pouch of Felix Kitten per day is nowhere near enough food.

I am just so glad that they have started eating now they've got access to plenty of food that they actually like. They are my chunky little monkeys now... and I can no longer pick them up by picking them up around their middles (from above) like I could before... now I have to pick them up under their bellies and sometimes use two hands.

Re: Weight Gain

Two handed pick ups I remember the transition from one handed tiny bundles so well!

I would go as far as to report the breeder hun How a vet said their weight and condition was fine I don't know

It's okay, Percy was 2.2kg at 14wk, 2.9kg at 19wk. Vet saw him for jabs and then for neutering and said he did not have any fat on him at all and he was a good weight, just a big cat all around.

That's probably just it then I only expected them to be about 1.6kg just now! The boys have massive paws though, so hopefully big paws = big boys in this case.

Re: Weight Gain

I can't believe those first pics

I wouldn't be too worried about a rapid weight gain as they are nearly at where they should be for their age which is a good thing. Arnold put on quite quickly from 13-18 weeks and then slowed down a bit, he's 6 months now and 3kg roughly.

Did the rest of the litter look about the same size?

Re: Weight Gain

They were a litter of seven originally and one of them died when they were under a week old, so we visited when there were six of them at 5 weeks old. Four of them were a similar size (including our two) and then there was a slightly smaller one, and then a very tiny one. The tiny one died at 6 weeks old. The others continued to gain weight although the smallest remaining one did stay quite small. By the time they were 11 weeks old, the smallest remaining one had caught up quite significantly.

When we collected the kittens, the two largest ones were not our two... so I think that the bigger ones had possibly been getting more food than ours. But even the largest kittens were quite skinny!

Re: Weight Gain

Wow - read the thread and noticed the pictures - those kittens are soooo skinny at the beginning, they actually look emaciated! - how any breeder could sell them on that underweight is beyond me - 13 weeks old kittens should be lovely and chunky (especially sibs). Well done you for getting them up to a good weight.
