Upset tummy advice

Hi, About 2 months ago I adopted to exotic shorthair kittens both aged 8 months. Soon after having them they both had upset tummys - i put this down to a new environment and new food. However after a week they were no better, so I took them to the vets who prescribed Royal Canin sensitivity. This did improve their stools a bit, so I tried them on a whiskers pouch which put them back to square one. After this I put them back on the sensitivity. This was about 2 weeks ago and there has still not been an improvement, the vet has said to just carry on with sensitivity but I am not convinced. I have now started introducing some James Wellbeloved gradually, with the plan being to move them onto that fully in 5 days.

What do people think about this? They probably do about 3/4 poops a day each - they aren't liquid but are very soft. Both kittens have put on weight since we had them, but I do really want them to get better!

Re: Upset tummy advice

Try some plain boiled chicken for a couple of days, and maybe mash this up with some Pumpkin which will help firm them up a bit.

Do you know what they were eating before?

Most Vetinary Practices get kickbacks from either Hills (Science Plan) or Royal Canine, so consider this when they recommend these foods.

Re: Upset tummy advice

None of the foods you have tried have really been very high quality and all contain grain (especially JWB which I would definitely avoid as I think it has rice as the main ingredient) If they have had consistently soft poos I would try cutting the grain out to see if that makes a difference.

It is best to feed a high quality, high meat content wet diet to bring the poo back under control, so my first port of call would be switching to wet and cutting out grain for now.

Re: Upset tummy advice

Thanks for the advice, they were on whiskers pouches and JWB before I has them. What's the best wet food I could give them for now?

Re: Upset tummy advice

Zooplus offers some good easily obtainable in the UK foods, with free delivery over £19. You could look at foods such as smilla, bozita and animonda carny.

Available from PAH is a pot called scrummy yummy, which is 90% meat and no grains which is easier obtained at shorter notice So waitroses also have started stocking lilys kitchen and yarrah (quite expensive for what they contain)

Remember all food needs to be switched over slowly so mix it in with the older food so to not cause more upset.

Also put up more pics! Not enough pics of exotics on here, my boys are lonely!

Re: Upset tummy advice

I'm in a dilemma now, I'm currently mixing JWB and royal canin to get them onto JWB, but it sounds like that's wrong. Should I continue for a few days then introduce the new wet food? I dont suppose morrisons sells any good wet foods? Its the only place I can really get to tomorrow. I'll put some pics up soon, they are v cute but I guess I'm biased! Are bad tummys common for exotics?

Re: Upset tummy advice

I don;t know about common as honeslty I dont know many people with them. My Gloworm did have a poorly tummy before I switched them onto raw/high quality wet and I believe both of the boys have a grain intolerance so i dont feed anything with cereal.

Dry in general isnt very good, and can cause issues with urinary tract infections due to the low moisture content.

If you want to move them onto the wet perhaps keep offering the mix of dry as it is at the moment, if they are okay on that, then gradually introduce some of the wet.

As for Morrisons, the only thing I know of which might be okay and they might sell is Butchers Classic. its not something I would personally feed but I think its quite a bit better than the other things like whiskas and felix there.
