4week old with runny eye

So Bella's kittens are 4 weeks old. A couple days ago I noticed that one of them had a watery eye and some eye gunk in his left eye. I thought Bella would clean it but the next morning crusted and he couldn't even open his eye. I dipped a cotton ball in warm water and gently wiped it away. I did this a few times in the next days and it seemed to clear up. Today I noticed it was watery again. I cleaned it with the same method.

Is it an infection?
What can I do to get it cleared out completely - is it back cause I stopped cleaning it?
I know he needs to see a vet, but you guys know where I am. When I went in after the kittens were born so that the vet would check if everything was ok, he didn't even take them out f the carrier just said "They don't smell like rotten eggs, they are fine"

Any home remedy I can use to disinfect the eye?

Re: 4week old with runny eye

I'm aware that where you are vets are not as reliable as here in the UK,but eyes are so delicate and can be made so much worse that I wouldnt recommend that you try to treat this yourself with anything other than cooled boiled water, which will do nothing to help if there is an infection.Would it be possible to phone or visit a few vets to find out if,as you are now in a different area, there is someone who sounds like they can help.Surely not everyone has to go without decent veterinary treatment.

Re: 4week old with runny eye

Sorry to hear about the little guy. It's a good sign it responded well to the bathing!

I would add a pinch of bicarbonate of soda ( baking soda ) to the warm water and bathe. I might be due to a slight infection and I hope this helps to clear it up. Doesn't sound too bad though considering he's the only one who has it!

Hope it clears up really soon for you!

Hi just seen your thread the best thing i have found to use is ateabag soaked in boiled water and left to go cold use the teabag dipped in the tea and squeezed out and gently wipe across hope fully you should notice an improvement after a couple of days clean the eye a few times a day for a couple of days i would NOT use cotton wool or anything like as the fibres in it can scratch the eye/lens tea has a natural healing antiseptic in it ive found it works quite well used on my dogs/pups cats and kittens they prob havent quite developed thier ducts enough yet obviously if it persists it may be worth contacting your vet just too make double sure hope this helps

Re: 4week old with runny eye

Eric was rubbish at cleaning his face until he was around 6 months so it is probably that he is just getting used to cleaning himself. As the others have said, bathe it a bit and just monitor it

Re: 4week old with runny eye

I will second the advice about the teabag. Dinah had conjunctivitis and hers cleared up with antibiotics. I noticed Monty getting sore eyes too and instead of paying another £40 for antibiotics for him, or risking using Dinah's meds on Monty, I tried the teabag trick for a day or two and his cleared up quicker than Dinah's.

Not that I'm saying that vet care is second choice but this worked for us.

Re: 4week old with runny eye

So it's been only 1.5 days but Leo's eye is looking much better. I am applying a fresh teabag on it 3-4 times a day. He hates it and crys so pitifully but it is for his own good.
