Wormers

I went to pick up some wormer for the babies last week, and was pleasantly surprised. It made me realise what a shame it is that Bob Martin etc actually produce the load of tosh that they do! I actually thought it would be more expensive than it was, it cost me £3.50 per dose (one for each baby) of Panacur, which comes to £7 for both of them. For Storm the Bob Martin would cost me £6 alone!! And it's crap, remember when my dad used it to worm his little girl and she still had to have a dose of Panacur as it didn't kill off the worms! Just goes to show that sometimes vet prices are more beneficial!

Re: Wormers

Just goes to show my granny was right when she used to say you can buy cheap or buy once

If you intend to worm regularly it will be even better value if you buy a bottle of Panacur rather than getting it by the dose.

Re: Wormers

Exactly! Will only be doing it monthly until Benji is 6 months, then we will probably go down to every six months as they are indoor kittehs!

Oh god, just realised I haven't been loggin on to that email account, so haven't seen if you have replied

Re: Wormers

Can someone help me out with a bit of wormer-related advice? I wormed my two kittens with Panacur (the kind that came in a syringe) and got in a right old mess with wriggly kittens and lacerated hands, but thought I'd got enough in them. Today one of them vomited up a worm, so it obviously didn't work and although I assumed it would have been the smaller girl (as I've been worried she wasn't growing as much as her brother), she's full of beans whereas her brother is very lethargic, so it must have been him. I only have Panacur granules in the house (one 1g sachet, two 1.8g and one 4.5g) and she's eaten a bit of the smaller one, but my little lad isn't eating.

So what I wanted to know is whether anyone knew if I could give Drontal tablets to 14-week-old kittens? With a pill-gun I thought perhaps I'd have more luck and the certainty that I'd got everything I need into them rather than all over my hands or smeared around a food bowl! If anyone can tell me what I should do as soon as possible, so I can get hold of some tablets quickly. Thanks.

Re: Wormers

Personally I would only get wormers from the vet, so, whatever the vets gives you.

Instead of a pill gun have you tried just putting the pills in some food? ive always just wrapped mine in some raw mince and the kittens eat it just fine.

Re: Wormers

I agree that you need to check with the vet about this....Drontal comes in fairly hefty sized tablets, whereas Milbemax ( that can only be bought on prescription or direct from vet) is a much smaller tablet and can be given fairly easily I find.

Re: Wormers

Thanks. The vet recommended the Panacur, but I didn't have much success as I said. I'll have to use the granules I have until I can get somewhere to get something else, but I think I might have better luck with tablets as he doesn't want to eat at the moment and the granules have to be mixed with food.

How long has your kitten been refusing food.Kittens who are not eating can go down hill very quickly anything more than 24 hours really needs vet advice, especially if he has vomited up a worm.

How I envy you! I have never ever had good luck getting pills into cats. I'd rather swim through razor blades . I've tried buttering the pill, hiding in ham, hiding in fish, hiding in mince, smashing into a powder and mixing in food. None of it has been very successful. I've always had more luck with liquids and even then, no matter how small the cat, it's been a two-man operation. I once had a cat who would sit on the table like an angel facing me, he'd take the syringe perfectly, I'd squirt it all in his mouth and then at the last second, he'd whip his head around and just spray me, the wall, the floor and the table with all of his meds. Little devil.

So, your two must be angels--you're incredibly lucky (or I'm incredibly inept lol)

We're going through this right now and our two are small. We've found that if you can have two people present it really helps. But if you hold the kitten on a slippery surface, press its back against your torso, hold the front feet down and out of the way (or they slap at everything) and once you get the syringe in, push it towards the back of the mouth and just shoot it in.

That said, I agree with everyone else here--if the kitten is refusing food and possibly threw up a worm, it needs to see a vet ASAP.
