Unhappy Advice please, at my wits end

It's Fluffy, I'm still awaiting the ranidazole to come in to the vets, meanwhile his diarrhea has got sooo bad, I must have cleaned up about 30 lots today, it's everywhere, over furnishings, floor, bedding, I have been in tears for the first time. His bottom is red raw and he yelps when passing it. I phoned the vets and he has given him a collar to stop him from cleaning/licking himself, as he said this is just helping to constantly reinfect himself with the bugs (tri trichomonus, giarda and all the other two he has) He absolutely HATES the collar, it's really upsetting him, I just don't know what to do for the best. Should I keep it on him and be cruel to be kind, or will another few days of him cleaning not make much difference. I just don't know what to do for the best.

Re: Advice please, at my wits end

the poor poor mite! I really don't know what I would do in your situation but didn't want to read and run hun. I think I would be inclined to leave the collar off as the situation is already stressful for him as it is but then again I can see where the vet is coming from. So, really don't know.

There are inflatable collars that are tolerated more by cats as they don't stick out so much as those lampshade ones. Perhaps you could see whether you can lay your hands on one of those?

Oh, and go and get the vet to hurry up with those meds! Is there nothing they can give him for now to help him?

Re: Advice please, at my wits end

I keep ringing and asking but he says concerning the bugs he has nothing will help. I am not very happy with the vets, I had the appt two weeks ago Monday and left there assuming they would be ordered that same day, and he phoned me a week later to tell me he had just ordered them and they would take 5 to 7 days, I don't know what they are playing at. I think he may be happier if I keep the collar off and try and confine him to one room, only I don't have a spare room to do this, I do have a conservatory but it gets far far too hot in there during the day.

I just need to vent, it's breaking my heart to see him so miserable. Every day I have prayed the drugs would arrive, if there was any doubt about giving them to him they have all gone, he desperately needs them ASAP, I just pray (I'm doing so much praying) that he is one of the lucky ones who they work for.

I sometimes wish I wasn't such an animal lover.

oh dear poor soul yes I would recommend a comfi collar as well. Not sure where you can get them though other than online.

Re: Advice please, at my wits end

SparkX, whereabouts in the country are you? I am just wondering whether there is someone near you who has got something like the comfi collar that they could lend you for the time being.

Vent away but it might be worth looking into changing vets in the future if you don't feel that they have pulled out all the stops.

I can sympathise a little. When bagpuss was young he had awful colics due to food allergies and when it was really bad (before we hit on what was causing it) he would poop bloody poo n times a day. Absolutely heartbreaking!

Re: Advice please, at my wits end

I'm in the UK, folkestone, Kent. I have taken the hard collar off, i cannot stand to see him get upset wearing it, he can't even scratch his ear. I guess he's been cleaning himself for the three months I've had him so a few more days won't hurt. And I've made him comfy in the conservatory, try and confine the mess to one area. He looks so sorry for himself. I hate this.

Why do these things always get worse on weekends when the vets don't open?

Sorry to hear about poor Fluffy. I too would be considering moving vets as it sounds as though they have been a bit lax! I hear what you are saying about Fluffy hating the collar but I would persevere or try to access a comfi collar, as you say, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
Sending cyber hugs your way as it sounds like you need them! Take care

Re: Advice please, at my wits end

I would definitely be inclined to move vets - your present vet's slow response is prolonging Fluffy's suffering; I know it will probably take the drug a week or two to kick in but if the vet had ordered the stuff straightaway you would have at least been able to start it at this point. It is poor practice on the vet's behalf (in my opinion) to delay ordering and thus leave Fluffy in dire straights longer than necessary.

I am so sorry for you and Fluffy. I hope things improve soon.

I am wondering why it has suddenly gotten worse. Has anything else changed?

There is always a vet available hun; though it might be an emergency one and therefore not the vet you have been using so far but that might not be a bad thing - fresh pair of eyes and all.

Re: Advice please, at my wits end

Did your vet not trying calling other vets in the area to see if they had some in?

Your poor kitty, it sounds like a very upsetting nightmare

Can you pop to your local DIY store and see if they have some pipe insulators? I think they come in different sizes and thicknesses. They are made of foam I think and will be bendy so you could make him a soft collar yourself fairly easily. Something like THIS.

Hope that helps!
