Question Preparing meals in advance for the fridge

We will be away for a couple of nights next week and our neighbour is coming in to feed the kittens.

I am keen to make sure they get the right amount of food and that it is as little hassle for our neighbour as possible, so would it be feasible to plate up the meals in advance and cover them with cling film, so they can just be put out at the relevant times?

The food would be in the fridge from Monday morning and served up to the kittens between then and Wednesday afternoon.

Will the food be okay in the fridge or is it best not to do this? It will be food from tins e.g. Grau.

Re: Preparing meals in advance for the fridge

How big is your fridge and do you have anything else in there?

You don't think just leaving her with the tins, a spoon, some plates and instructions she can figure it out herself?

TBH, food tends to taste the best when a tin has just been opened and the longer the food is in the fridge the less it seems to be liked (general observation, I am sure there are cats who are exceptions to the rule).

Also, don't forget that food shouldn't be fed directly from the fridge but needs to warm up a little.

Personally, I would show her the ropes the night before (i.e. where tins are kept, where the spoons and plate are) and how much they should get at a pop.

Re: Preparing meals in advance for the fridge

When we asked our neighbour to look after our fish we got them to feed them the night before we left, as we crush the food up and soak it before feeding and we had to ensure they were fed the correct amount. (at the time one had swimbladder)

I think if you are trusting someone responsible to look after your kittens then they should really be capable to giving the correct amount of food at the right times without you having to pre-pack bowls

I know you are worrying about leaving them when you go away, but they will be fine x

Re: Preparing meals in advance for the fridge

I do trust him... just wanted to make it as hassle-free as possible as he works full-time and I suppose I don't want to put him off if we ever need to ask him again in the future. Though at this rate I don't ever want to go away again and leave them and am really stressing myself out thinking about being away!

To be honest, I'm actually thinking more of later in July when we're thinking of possibly asking our friends who are both vegetarian. I know they would have a real issue with opening tins of meat and squishing it up for our kitties. Unfortunately they are the only people I think will be available that particular weekend.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Re: Preparing meals in advance for the fridge

Maybe you are just presuming that they will have issues with opening tins of cat food. I am a vegetarian, as are quite a lot of peeps on here, and we all seem to be coping ok

Nope not presuming. I knew you were vegetarian as I remember reading it in one of your raw threads however these particular friends feed their cat dry food simply because they can't handle opening wet food cans! I thought that if I could just ask them to whip off the cling film and put it out then they would be able to cope with that.

Gosh! Well at least they haven't taken it one step further and are feeding the cat vegetarian cat food.

Oh yes Actually, one former lovely poster on here - BillyBoysMammy, ended feeding vegetarian cat food to one of her cats as she turned out to be allergic to all meat. So, that food has some special place in the food chain I guess but the concept is quite horrific, isn't it?

Re: Preparing meals in advance for the fridge

My dad is vegan and has talked about feeding his dog and cat vegan food. He doesn't at the moment - think he feeds the cat Hill's dry food and the dog some other dry food. He seemed horrified when I mentioned feeding ours wet food and mentioned how it smells... personally I think dry food smells worse?!
