How much to feed?

How much dry food do you think growing kittens should eat? Do you sometimes think they make a pig of themselves if dry is left down 24/7 or will they eat what they need and no more?

Smile Re: How much to feed?

Personally, I always weigh my kitten's food, even if it does get left down, so I know how much she is or isn't eating.

At about four months, I was feeding 25g wet in a morning, 30g dry at dinner, 25g wet at tea, and 30g dry before bed.

At about six months until present (eight months), I have been feeding 50g wet food in the morning, 50g dry food at tea, and 35g of wet food before bed.

Obviously, the changes in amounts were gradual. It probably depends on which foods you're feeding, though, as to how full your kittens feel after each meal, and how much they'll need. I was always worried about leaving just anything out in case she got fat.

Re: How much to feed?

Re: How much to feed?

I have to admit I'm not too specific about the amounts I feed...I just fill their bowls up with biscuits in the morning and again in the evening and give them half a pouch each of wetfood twice a day.

I am thinking of increasing the dry food though because they are finishing what I give them pretty quickly.

It would probably just depend on the breed of cat as well, though, wouldn't it? As an athletic-type cat will show its tubbiness before certain other breeds? Also, as far as I know, it can depend on whether they're neutered or not. Maus loose their grace if they become overweight, so it's best to keep more of an eye on what they're eating, I guess??

Re: How much to feed?

yes, i can't weigh my food as i have 7 cats of different ages so that's not possible. i just wondered if kittens/cats would eat for the sake of it, even if not hungry.

Oh, in that case, I don't know. Sorry. What breed are your little ones? Do they normally finish up whatever's in their bowl regardless of how much you put in it, or do they leave it when full up?

Re: How much to feed?

I think if they've been okay with the arrangements so far, you might as well stick to how you've been feeding them. Whenever my kitten goes to the vet, I just ask them to weigh her, so I know that she isn't overweight. Other than that, everyone feeds their kitties differently, in different amounts and at different intervals, but as long as they don't seem hungry, or seem to be "pigging out" then I wouldn't worry.

Re: How much to feed?

i don't weight it out personally unless i think they are over weight(cats not kittens) i usually just leave it down and top it up all day. i think limiting food as a youngster can cause over eating later as they don't get as much as they need so scarf it down when they do get it.
