Renal Diet

Can anyone recommend a good renal food.

Currently feeding a mix of Whiskers Senior and Royal Canin Renal wet food. 1/4 pouch of each a day. Then Iams senior complete dry food put out all day. My cat is eating about 30-50grams of the dry a day.

He eats mainly in the morning and during the night, only nibbling bits during the day and evening.

I've only had my cat for just over a week, so following advice from cat sanctury, my cat is 17years old.

Thanks

Katrina

Re: Renal Diet

Has your cat been diagnosed with renal insufficiency then?

A renal food is only good if the cat in question will eat it! Some cat's take to renal diets very well while others won't touch them. While we normally recommend wet diets over dry here, with renal ones even a dry one is better than none at all.

Here's a list of renal diets from Tanya's excellent website!

Re: Renal Diet

Great advice from Ianthi.

I would just like to repeat her question: Has your cat been diagnosed with renal issues or have you been told to feed these foods because he is an older cat?

If he has been diagnosed with kidney issues, then personally I would cut out the IAMS dry food from his diet, which, by the lack of moisture and the carb content, will not do his kidneys any favours.

Re: Renal Diet

If your kitty has been diagnosed, then the best dry foods are Hills K/D or HappyCat Renal, in terms of wet Royal Canin renal pouches etc. If your cat doesn't touch any of it there is the option of feeding a better quality food but with binders. I know people who have successfully contacted Royal Canin and Hills and got testers of their various renal foods both wet and dry so you can call and ask first, before committing to buying loads!

Re: Renal Diet

My 18 year old persian has recently been diagnosed with CRF.

If your cat has been diagnosed with renal failure and this is the correct type of food to have him/her on I have some Happy Cat Renal biscuits and Royal Canin - if you would like to try your cat out on these drop me a PM and I'd be happy to send a sample of each to you.
