Brushing Teeth???

Okay I know one is suppose to brush a cat's teeth but how do you get your cat to stay still and allow you to do it? I have tried the tiny brush, the finger brush and my cats HATE it and won't let me do a thorough job.

I feed them a mix of raw (with bones) and wet canned.
I don't want them to have to go under and have their teeth cleaned later in life or lose teeth but is it really necessary to clean their teeth?

Re: Brushing Teeth???

Chewing through sinue and raw bones should help clean the teeth. There are pastes like logic gel that are supposed to contain enzymes that help break down plaque, that work if the cat just licks the paste, although they obviously work best if brushed.

My friend brushes her cats teeth although she got them used to it when they were very young. Plus they love the taste of the CET toothpaste so that helps.

The head on a cat toothbrush looks way too big to me. I have tried with a human baby toothbrush, but it was a struggle. The vet suggested a bit of gauze wrapped round your finger works just as well as a brush, but even then, cats don't seem to have alot of space between their teeth and cheeks, doesn't give you much room to work with.

you can get toothpaste that you don't have to brush with. it's called Logic gel. you can get it online or from your vets. just put it on their lips or in their mouth or even on their paw if you think they will lick it up and it does all the work for you. also just because you brush a cats teeth/or use the gel, or feed raw with bones doesn't mean the cat won't have to have teeth cleaned later in life or teeth removed. some teeth problems are hereditary and there it's really any prevention for it. you can just keep it from getting worse.

Re: Brushing Teeth???

Bones and other hard or gristly stuff in the cat's food probably helps, but is by no means guaranteed to keep the plaque at bay.

If you are having trouble keeping your cats still you could try sitting on your knees and reversing them in, so they are facing away from you. You should be able to get a solid enough grip to turn their heads round so they are looking over one shoulder at you.

Alternatively you could wrap them up in a towel leaving only the head sticking out. Means you don't have to concern yourself with keeping claws from scratching and feet from running away.

That sounds great but I can't find any site that ships it to the U.S. I am going to see if I can find something similar.

Edit: Found a place that will ship to the US. Thanks for your help everyone!
