Unhappy Snotty nose but no reasons

Hello! Wonder if someone could enlighten me with this -

I adopted 2x 8 month old's from a Haven, 1 suffering from a terribly snotty nose!! I was told that once he was in a stable and happy environment his nose shoudl clear up as he has been for all the tests possible, specifically immunity - and he was given the clear. He is slighty drug resistant although when he is on a course - his nose clears up quite alot, the minute course is done - snot is flying all over again...

Anyone with any ideas - it is winter and coldish - . . . .

Re: Snotty nose but no reasons

Hi there and welcome!

Which tests has your kitty had? These symptoms could be due to anything ranging from one of the feline flu viruses ( herpes, calici ) or chlamydia infection to a foreign body/polyp lodged in his nasal passages. The former will be activated during periods of stress so I think this is what the rescue meant when they said it would clear up. The response to antibiotics could point to a secondary bacterial infection which is common with these flu viruses etc.

It may be just resolve itself when he's more settled in his new home. If not then I would have further investigations but be aware it may take some time to clear completely. Also sometimes cats with flu symptoms can be left with some residual symptoms ie it may never clear completely!

I'd pop him along to your vet and see what he says!

Re: Snotty nose but no reasons

My Norwegian Forest cat went through the same thing. She was snotty on and off for most of her 1st year. She is now 20 months old and it fine, she has outgrown it, she has been fine so far this year.

She had lots of blood tests, and it turned out it may have been an allergy of some sort, but it corrected itself as she is now ok.
