Kidney failure in 1yr old MC male??

I've just had a really upsetting phonecall off one of my best mates who i rehomed a young male MC with his sister that i'd brought in for stud but wasn't going to be stud material (too nutty but was a sweet boy)

I've just been told he's got kidney failure and having to be put down!!

Does anyone know why such a young boy would get this?? is it something genetic or anything the breeder did??

I'm asking as i know a breeder who has one of this boys sisters and if it's something that could have been with the whole litter i need to tell her really

Can find bits and bobs about this stuff but not anything enough to explain it properly, does anyone know much about this or could point me in the right direction??

i'm in complete peices - i feel so awful aswell as i didn't have a clue!! xx The vet bill has come to 3k aswell but i sent him with petplan insurance so hopefully this will be covered x i've offered to help pay for anything over though if it isn't as i feel responsible for their loss even though i had no idea xx

i've also promised her that if she wants a kitten to replace Alfie (sounds awful i know but alot of people replace quickly) that she is welcome to one of my own breeding for free and i test my girls and boys for everything i possibly can anyway xx

i'm shell shocked i tell you xx what an awful thing to happen to such a sweet little man!!

Am so sorry.

This really shows that you are a good person and a responsible breeder.

I think maybe it would be a good idea to share with the breeder you got the boy from. Put yourself in their position: would you rather know or not?

I will share this information with them when i know if it's something they did or not. Lets just say i was a still a tad naive back then but i am not now xx

However i am more worried about my friend who has his sister at present xx

Thank you aswell for your comment - i know he wasn't from my breeding but i still rehomed him with a friend and i do feel responsible for their loss even if i still know in the back of my mind that it isn't my fault but he was such a lively soul he never showed me there was anything wrong with him - AND he was regularly vet checked like everyone else in my house - you could say i'm overly cautious but theyre my furbabies and even if i wasn't breeding them aswell i like to know theyre healthy xx

Chronic renal failure is generally considered a geriatric disease. However, the age of cats diagnosed with chronic renal failure may vary from 9 months or less to extreme old age. In very young animals, chronic renal failure may often occur in association with congenital or inherited renal diseases.

I do hope you find out exactly what is going on with this boy - it sounds really strange

surely there must be some sort of treatment that would help, even if just for a short while.

I know, thats why i've been searching all night as the vet just wants to put him down!! xx

I've txt my mate and waiting on a reply (he's at work) as if he's already been PTS then i'm fighting a losing battle but if there's something that can be done i'm trying to find it xx

problem is they've already spent 3k in bills and theyre only young so i can imagine that has taken a huge chunk of any savings (even though insurance may pay it back) xx

it would be nice to know exactly what it is - as if it's PKD (i don't think the breeder tests) then they need to know and so does my friend with his sister xx

Re: Kidney failure in 1yr old MC male??

It's so heartbreaking when things like this happen, it's bad enough in an older cat, but when they're so young. If they've spent that much already I take it the vets have sent the cat or samples at least to one of the big veterinary hospitals ? I would of thought something would of showed up not that I know anything about kidney problems in cats. Thats why I wanted to get hold of my friend
