Re: Kidney failure in 1yr old MC male??

Lou I've only just caught up with this and I am so sorry to hear your news.

I can imagine that you are feeling awful but you weren't to know that there was anything wrong with him so please don't beat yourself up over it.

I have no experience of this whatsoever but I do feel that you should let the breeder know as if it is hereditary, they should be testing any cats that they are breeding from and letting other kitten owners be aware that there ould be a problem.

Take care and I will speak to you soon

Lou

Re: Kidney failure in 1yr old MC male??

Hi Lou

I'm really sorry to hear that

Just something I thought of maybe something or nothing.

I know that HCM is known in Maine Coons is that right??

It has come to light that it is in the Bengal breed too & I have heard that it can effect the kidneys?? I'm no expert at all but do you know if he has been tested for HCM?

Maybe worth a shot & at least you will know if this is the case & medication will help.

Didn't mean to put a damper on an already awful situation but thought it might be of some use. I really hope there is something that can be done

Re: Kidney failure in 1yr old MC male??

In such a young cat I'd suspect a congenital defect, a hereditary defect or poisoning.

If the cat was on some kind of medication the medicine might have caused it.

An autopsy might be able to tell what caused it.

I'm so sorry.

You'd hope wouldn't you xx

Just been speaking to my own vet aswell - she says unless they actually did a kidney biopsy or a PM if they PTS then it's hard to know xx

Can't help but beat myself up about it xx Have asked Davey if he'll ask his sister if Vet can make a proper diagnosis - as i said to them if it's genetic i need to inform breeder and HOPE she gets her cats tested then xx

The HCM info is good too - he was never tested here as he never ended up as stud cat and at 6 months old i already knew he wasn't stud material - so cos My mates were so in love with him they had him as pet xx

i know he wasn't on any drugs and he only had a short course of synolux here when he got bad bowels when he came to me so i've ruled that factor out unless breeder had him on anything before he came x

he's only ever been fed good food but always drank a fair bit anyway (but no over excessive otherwise even i would have said something - i have girls that drink more than others but usually as they like their dry food)
