Question Indoor Cat food

Hi there

I have read the very enlightening threads about wet and dry cat food and went out and bought some tins of Encore this afternoon, Jess loves it

However, I was wondering about food for indoor cats. Most of the 'grain free' dry foods (which I will now be feeding along with wet food) don't have an 'indoor' variety. Is it necessary to feed a cat who lives indoors specific food? I was particularly concerned about hairballs - she spends ages grooming herself lol.

I've only had Jess for 5 weeks and she is the first cat I have ever owned so I don't know much about their dietry requirements. She was solely on shop's own brand dry food when I got her (just 'normal' variety) and I thought I was doing the right thing feeding her on Go Cat indoor cat until I read about the junk in it last night!!

I'd be grateful for any advice

Thanks, Lolly x

Re: Indoor Cat food

Hi Lolly,

Indoor and outdoor cats have exactly the same nutritional requirements, just indoor cats may need sligtly less depending on activity levels. Hairballs unfortunately are just one of those things, growing some kitty grass will help with with Jess' digestion as well as provide her with some entertainment.

Thanks Ali, I've got some kitty grass growing on my window sill, hopefully it'll be ready for Jess to chew on soon.

Re: Indoor Cat food

The difference between indoor and outdoor cat foods is in protien levels, as an indoor cat does not require as much as an outdoor cat with higher activity levels.
Another feature is some indoor cat foods, such as Royal Canin indoor, have extras to help with odour control of cats poo. We have customers who do say it does make a difference.

Royal Canin, Royal Canin Adult Cat Food - Indoor 27 UK

Cheers Fraz.

Sorry Fraz but I do disagree with this bit, they usually have less protein and more carbohydrate (from grains). I can't see in any way how that would be more beneficial to an indoor cat.
