Kitten size

We have a lovely litter of 5 kittens (4 weeks old). All of them are very perky, healthy and into all sorts of mischief. I do have one concern though. The runt of the litter is so much smaller than all the others. She is bright and healthy, but i want to know if it means she will grow up to be a small cat or will size differences right themsleves through their growing period later on? I would like to keep her as she is very affectionate and vocal.

Re: Kitten size

I am not a breeder myself, but am bringing home two kittens from a large litter of 7 next week. One of the kittens' brothers was a little scrap of a thing, less than half the size of the others, when we visited the litter at 5 weeks old. I couldn't imagine him growing!

But when we visited them at 11 weeks, he had almost caught up with his siblings. He's still the smallest but definitely "proper kitten-sized" now and nice and chunky. I can't wait to see how much he's grown again when we collect our two on Thursday.

So as long as the little one is bright and healthy, there is hope that she can grow. The breeders on here will know a lot more than I know though.

Re: Kitten size

Thank you Bonnie
You have given me hope.
As i said before she is bright and perky, but the size difference is enormous. I have a feeling she doesnt get as much of mums milk, as I note she is always getting pushed off the teat by the others as they bully her out of the way being so much heavier. Hopefully once she catches on to solid food she will build up a bit more

Re: Kitten size

I seem to remember the breeder was hand-feeding the little one for a while, but I don't know what with. He was getting shoved out of the way a bit when feeding from mum so she felt the need to top him up (once he got to 5 weeks or so). I'm sure the breeders will be along soon to give you some more advice.

Re: Kitten size

No, I did not top her up because she is healthy and perky. I searched for info online and read that unless the kitten appears ill or is lethargic then not to do that if it can be avoided.
