Yuk yuk yuk!

Got a beautiful kitten yesterday. A gorgeous little 10 week old girlie.....

BUT she's not so beautiful at the moment

When I picked her up the lady said that she was being fed on Iams (she had just been put on it) as Felix upset her stomach.

So I grabbed some Iams to mix in with the applaws that I had already got for her.

I noticed that her tum was very round and hard and asked if she had been wormed 'O yes with Sherleys as its not too strong for them but she is due to be done again' was the answer.

Why do people do that? buy stuff over the counter when you can get wormer for just the same amount of money?

So stopped off at vets to pick some up. He gave Advocate as a dog flea was found on her so probably more and she has ear mites too

So thats where the fun started. On way back from vets She was meowing, getting stressed (she had been in car for god while now) and then *sniff sniff* uh oh yeah she had pooed and walked all through it!

Had to wash her off when got in and thoroughly dried her. But then last night was noticing that as she was walking around she was pooing Very loose.

Borrowed a kitten pen to put her in. This morning she is still very loose. Vet has said its a combination of worming, stress, travelling etc but as She is eating, drinking, playing to see how she goes.

So have her on chicken and white fish, water. But she goes into the litter tray to go but proceeds to lay in it. Her coat gets covered and with bits of litter too. I have to keep bathing her with cotton wool and then drying her but her bottom is really swollen and red. I've been giving her a dusting of talc to soothe her.

Has anyone any ideas on what I can put on her sore bottom? I have Savlon but surely that will sting?

Sorry for long post but know you guys will advise

Re: Yuk yuk yuk!

Oh pants. I am sorry that the euphoria of having a new kitten is being dampened by bad breeding practices. Really sorry.

The sore bottom should sort itself out when the cause of the "dire rear" has been addressed. Apart from keeping it clean I wouldn't use any products. Considering that you say that it is red and sore looking it sounds as though that this has been a long standing issue.

It could simply be that it was the Felix and that IAMS might help her settle. For the moment I would hold off introducing new food as she is having a rather stressful time already.

It could be due to parasites, in which case the stuff you got from the vets will take care of that.

But considering that this sounds like a longer standing issue, which the breeder rightly or wrongly blamed on the Felix, I would be inclined to get her stool tested for parasites (although you are taking care of those with the wormer) but also bacteria.

Did they weigh her when you were at the vets?

Hope that helps

Re: Yuk yuk yuk!

Do not use talc or Savlon as they could also upset her if she licks them off. Just stick to wiping her with warm water and cotton wool if she needs cleaning.

The vet said to put her onto boiled chicken and white fish which I have today. Am hoping that by tonight there should be some improvement.

So you reckon to gradually re-introduce the Iams to the chicken/fish when She improves and not the Applaws?

Yes I have to take her back on Monday if no improvement (obviously before if she deteriates). No they didnt weigh her they just said she was a good weight (not underweight I suppose that means by feeling backbone). Going to hunt out my scales and see what they go up too.

I'll just carry on bathing her. Was just hoping there was something I could put on her....she must be so sore bless her.

Shes definatly full of worms Hopefully only parasites that can be treated with the advocate so they will be gone over the next few days......how long does it take I wonder ......I've only ever used Panacur.

Poor little mite cant even come out to play, even though its a big pen and she is going crazy with the catnip toys it would be nice to have a cuddle and play

Re: Yuk yuk yuk!

Sorry you have not got off to the best of starts.
My vets advised sudocreme for sore bums, but i didnt use it.

I used just plain old vaseline to give my kitty some relief and to act as a barrier, after cleaning the area with some water and cotton wool.

When we first got Indy she was on Felix and had runny poos , but once i got her onto better foods they became more solid.

If it doesnt clear up then, as Hobbs said i would look into a stool sample being checked for nasty parasites that can live in their gut.

Hopefully you will be able to avoid that with a dose of a good wormer and a change of food.

Good Luck

Kellyxx

ps...i have had a few ups and downs with stomach upsets with my two..it will be a distant memory soon and you will get to enjoy all the good bits

Re: Yuk yuk yuk!

I would get her back onto the iams by mixing with the chicken or fish once things have started improving then wait a few weeks before introducing the Applaws, are planning on only feeding dry as it is much better for them to be on wet with only a little dry if you really want to feed dry.

Re: Yuk yuk yuk!

Debs, sorry, yes you said that you had put her on a plain boiled chicken diet. Good - keep her on that for a good few days! Would I reintroduce the Iams, tough call. Probably not.

How often does she poop? And is her stool a normal brown colour - just runny or is it paler, with mucus etc?

Edit: Just saw GH's reply. I agree with her but also agree with her on the wet diet. So much better for cats....

The others have Nature diet wet with Applaws dry down all the time to nibble so hopefully she will go on to the same.

Yes she is on boiled chicken with white fish in it too. Plus a little juice.

Yes poo is right colour, no mucas just really loose. She didnt know it was coming away from her last night. (nor that she was dripping over my sofas)

With dogs they always say chicken/rice and whitefish and rice...should I add a little rice too??
