Looks like Max may have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Max has been coughing for months, back and forth to the vet for feline asthma. Over the weekend his tongue went blue/purple and his coughing became worse.
I took him to the vet who kept him in for a few days to do more tests.
There is a possibility that he has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The specialist vet says that the wheezing and congestion isn't linked to the heart condition and maintains that its asthma and the heart condition is a separate condition.
He's a young moggie(just 1). Thankfully he is a house/garden cat who doesn't get stressed out.
The vet has started him on diuretics, an ace inhibitor and he is to continue with his steroids. He may also need a heart monitor strapped to him for 24 hours as his heart beat keeps dipping.
Poor thing

So sorry to hear about Max. Hope the vets can come up with a course of treatment that will help him.

Sorry to hear about this - my girl has HCM - diagnosed at 2 and 1/2 - she is quite a poorly girl and will eventually (in the not to distant future) die of this. The coughing could be caused by congestion or fluid on the lungs all symptoms of HCM. I'd seek a second opinion. Good luck with him and enjoy every day.

Thank you both
Spid I'm sorry to hear about your girl Does she sleep a lot? What medication does she take?
The reason the vet believes the coughing is asthma as the xrays don't show any fluid in the lungs just mucous around the bronchi. He's had a lung wash and the results were thick mucous also the vets said that cats don't cough with congestion just dogs and humans.
His left ventricle has thickened and the right ventricle is very enlarged. The heart is long and is touching his windpipe Its so sad.

SHe is on atenonol - a beta blocker - and that is all. She does sleep a lot - about 90% of the time I would guess. She does like a little wander outside too. My vet said she would begin to cough as fluid begins to build up in her lungs and we would know when it was 'time' when she started panting. We have her an extra 18 months now and hope she will go on longer (the vet was nice but reckons she won't last another year). It is sad but I look at her and see she is happy at the mo and try not to think about the future. I dread taking her to the vets in case they tell me it's time.
