Question Do cats eat from their own bowls?

We have separate bowls for our new kittens (who aren't home yet) and I was wondering if cats tend to stick to eating from their own bowls - i.e. can be trained or just learn to eat from one particular bowl? I have never had cats before so don't know.

Obviously it'll give us a better idea of which food each cat likes, how much each cat eats, and so on, if they stick to eating from their own bowls.

Re: Do cats eat from their own bowls?

Mine swap over multiple times while they're eating a meal.

Re: Do cats eat from their own bowls?

Depends on the cat. My cats share their dry food bowls, but each like a seperate bowl for their wet food. They have their own "dinner service": small brown ceramic bowls. These bowls have to be placed at certain points, just so and a certain distance apart and Nunu's has to be to the left of The Flea's. Girly will only eat her wet food on the counter.

Tell me about it! The system has broken down a bit since advent of wet food and new kittens but when I fed dry they all had designated spots and would only eat there. Once when I had a cat sitter I put selotape X marks with cat's names on in the correct locations!

Re: Do cats eat from their own bowls?

My kittens share all their bowls; wet food, dry food and water. If they had separate bowls I don't think I would be able to keep track on whether they ate from their own bowls all day, as they don't eat their food in one sitting, but my guess would be they always think the other has the better food - even when their food is the same!

Although I don't need to, I still weigh them every week, although I can see from their appearance that both eat perfectly well. The more dominant has always been the lightest but they are both putting on at least 1-1.5lb a week so I guess their diet suits them fine.

When you get them you will be able to see if they are happy to share or if one is a bully in the food arena - all cats are different in that respect. You can always get another bowl if you need it and perhaps feed them separately if there is a problem.

Re: Do cats eat from their own bowls?

Both of my boys like to sit on their climbing tree and eat from a bowl which is placed on the windowsill. Unfortunately, the bit of the climber they sit on is only big enough for one cat at a time so they take it in turns. The second bowl will either be in the kitchen or on the stairs and the non-climber cat will eat from that one until it is time to swap over.

Abby, however, has decided that the little bowl she currently has is 'hers' and won't eat from the boys bowls even if she is hungry. She will wait until I put some food down for her either on the floor on in her bowl.

Re: Do cats eat from their own bowls?

Molly takes her food OUT of her bowl off her place mat, and prefers to eat from the carpet!

Same here. Mai Tai will also sit back and let Rosie eat first. She does the same with her own kittens too

Merson used to do this when they got tinned food but no longer does it with his wet kibbles. Maybe they are more difficult to pick up with being so soft & slushy....
