Query about Renal Diet

Hello
My 17 year old, very fit and healthy, cat Shadow had a blood and urine test yesterday as she was drinking a lot although isn't any more.
All the tests were normal apart from 'slightly raised' globulin which the vet said could be an infection and prescribed antibiotics.

She also said Shadow should be on a renal diet. Is this really necessary as her test were largely normal or would it be advisable anyway given her age? of course the vet was keen to tell me how much the food would be bought from them!
thanks
Ann

Hi Ann,

Sorry not much good with this sort of thing. I just wanted to wish Shadow all the best and hope his infection clears up soon.

I was looking on Zooplus recently for new food for mine and did see some brands who did renal food but can't for the life of me remember which one. But this means it is available else where possibly cheaper than the vets. I also saw some in pets at home today.

Someone should be along soon who can hopefully help more.

Thanks
Shadow seems fine, you wouldn't know she had any sort of infection!
I've sourced a couple of online suppliers of renal food and its much cheaper than the vets, especially if you buy in bulk. Just not sure if it is advisable to feed it unless they have to.
Apart from anything the fat content seems quite high and she is not suffering from lack of appetite and could do with losing a bit of weight! (I know how she feels

Re: Query about Renal Diet

Hi

My cat has to have a renal diet as he has CRF, although he won't eat renal wet food but does eat RC renal biscuits and he has binders with his normal food in order to lower the phosphorus levels.

You will probably get a lot of help with your question if you post on cat health section, loads of knowledgable peeps on here

I have some renal wet food that i would be more than happy to send to you for your cat to try before you spend any money, just PM me your details if your interested

Welcome to the forum Ann.

Hmm not sure on the merit of putting a healthy cat on a renal diet just because she is a little elderly. What are you feeding her normally? The only thing I would suggest is that if you currently feed her dry food to perhaps look to move her on to wet food - the extra moisture and the fewer carbs will stand in her stead and will help to minimise the load on her kidneys.

Re: Query about Renal Diet

I have to agree with Hobbs, unless phosphorus, proteinurea, BUN and createnine are outside normal levels and he thus is diagnosed with CRF, there shouldn't be a need for it at all. Wet food is much better for them though

Re: Query about Renal Diet

Thanks all, I will repost in the health section.
We always feed out cats with wet food because of urinary/renal issues.

Unless the renal value were high normal then there's really no need at all. Perhaps this is what the vet had in mind? I would clarify this with your him. Out of interest what are you feeding her at the moment?

I would actually get a copy of the blood results which will enable you to tract her levels when tested at a later stage. It's a good idea for older cats to have annual bloodwork to nip potential problems early and unforunately renal problems are a feature of older animals and best to identify these at an early stage!
