Question Urine Specimin

Our Molly is 3yrs old Bengle Cross. In her 1st year of life she was diagnosed with renal failure.

She is due in tomorrow Thursday for her Booster. I also want the vet to investigate her kidney failure again as she is drinking heaps and looking quite rough around the body.
Instead of evasive intervention from the vet, I have shut her in a room with litter tray with special stuff in to retrieve this wee sample.
She has been in there since yesterday morning Tuesday and still has not done a thing.
How long does it take, she is going frantic to be let out, but for her own good I need this wee sample. I know she has got to go in the end, but surely she can't hold her wee much longer can she?

Re: Urine Specimin

I had a diabetic cat and part of her treatment required occas.urine sampling.I tried the gravel type of "litter" which I imagine is the stuff you are using and she would refuse to pee in it,and had been known to "pee"outside her tray which was something she "didnt do" so I gave up and actually used the dog urine sample collection tube with the deep spoon shaped attachment..As soon as she went to pee I just slipped it under her bum, taking great care not to touch her and job done.Cats do not make our job easy, good luck as you say surely she cant hang on much longer.

Re: Urine Specimin

Poor Molly

Its blinking murder trying to get a sample off cats, not much easier off dogs I eventually gave up with the litter stuff from the vets when I had to get a sample off Scutter he kept going in the bath instead

I loitered inconspicuously round the litter trays & when he went in whiped the lid off & poped a little dish under him when he was in mid flow

Good luck

Re: Urine Specimin

So young!( Pardon my ignorance, but is this common in Bengals? I thought CRF is more prevalent in older cats?

Have you got anthing like a flat clean pie dish or baking tray with a fairly high lip around the edge? I usually collect mine by pushing it under them quick as they "squat" in the garden, then transfer it into the sample container.

Re: Urine Specimin

If it has been a long time she maybe in pain to go and thats why she is stressed, best give the catching it in a dish a go as the others mention? Cats are so difficult!!

Did the vet ever find the cause of the renal failure? While chronic renal failure is mainly a conditon of older cats, with younger ones it is more likely to be acute renal failure very often due to kidney infection or stones. I'd like to know more about when she was diagnosed, what investigations were done and treatments.

You mention she's been drinking lots. I would therefore be concerned if she's not urinating at all. If she hasn't at this stage I would inform the vet straight away. This could well develop into an emergency situation.

Re: Urine Specimin

I too have used a foil/small plastic container, but it should be VERY clean, check with vet if it should be sterile

Can I just add, personally I would NOT allow my vet to vaccinate a dog with renal failure.

Hope all is well x

Re: Urine Specimin

Yes, agree but I doubt if the vet would do it this Thursday under the circumstances!

With chronic renal failure no I wouldn't vaccinate but with a one off episode ie acute renal failure due to infection etc then when this has cleared up, I don't see a problem.
