Re: Cat flu - how have they got it?
Sorry to hear this - the flu viruses are very common indeed and also very infectious - vaccinations against them aren't very effective, so a cat can easily become infected despite being fully vaccinated, but a vaccinated cat should not become seriously ill. Kittens are particularly vulnerable and often get infected before they've been vaccinated, or they can even get infected as a result of the vaccination in certain cases.
I hope Hugo is well again soon - did he get antibiotics for his chest infection? Quote:

Re: Cat flu - how have they got it?
Hi CS, i also agree with the KK and A,it's not nice at all but as your vet will have explained it can be lived with as long as your on the ball with your cat(which you are),i'm sure Hugo will bounce back soon
It seems likely he'd have got it from where he was bred,if your certain he's had no other outings![]() Last edited by Siamese Kelly; 17-10-2008 at 06:02 PM.. |

Re: Cat flu - how have they got it?
Just so you know, cat flu isn't always the terrible thing that it is sometimes made out to be! It is very possible and very common for your cat to rid itself of this virus I think it is 75 days after contracting it, and then it stops shedding virus particles too.
It is obviously possible for them to pick it up again from another source but it certainly isn't something that you will have to worry about long-term. Some cats (a very small percentage) do become carriers but as long as the cat is healthy, given the correct nutrition and antibiotics should it become ill with any respiratory infections, I would expect them to be absolutely fine! As mentioned above, it is so infectious, it could have come from the breeder or even from the vet at a check up - the incubation period is between 1 and 10 days so could show up incredibly quickly. The vet can do a throat swab test which gets sent off to a lab to confirm that your cat definately has this virus. Lou X |

Re: Cat flu - how have they got it?
Great minds think alike!!! Unfortunately, this kind of virus is so common in kittens coming from breeders that you need to know all you can about it in order to make sure you don't send kittens out in the same condition!
As you mentioned in another post, I will be getting all my cats routinely tested once a year and kittens tested before they go to their new homes. Lou X |

Re: Cat flu - how have they got it?
Thanks for all your replies.
They are both on ronaxan for a week. They are both fine and don't appear unwell apart from the sneezes and Hugo's odd cough, I've seen a cat with cat flu before (matted together eyes, crusty nose) so it's a bit of a shock that that's what ours have got as they have none of that. The sneezes started 7-9 days after they came home so I told the breeder straight away and they came back and said they'd checked with the people who had their litter mates and they were all well so I accepted the vets allergy suggestion until Wednesday when I noticed Hugo cough. The vets they are registered with now is so much nicer, they have a homeopathic vet and the one I saw yesterday is happy to neuter as soon as they are well enough, last vet refused to do until Jan by which time they will be 7 months. I'm just back from pets at home laden with goodies for them!
