Fish and Tuna

My cat is a really fussy eater, he has never really liked wet food, he did eat it for a while but now he will pick at it and I end up throwing away more than he eats. He also used to have raw meat sometimes but last time I gave it to him he walked away and wouldn't touch it.

He does like fish though so I cook him white fish and give him tinned tuna once a week. He also has Purina One dry kitten food, although he will go onto the adult food soon when he is one year. He eats quite a bt of the dry food.

I am a bit worried though that I am not giving him a healthy diet.

Can anyone give me some advice please?

Re: Fish and Tuna

Hey there, it really depends on how often you feed the cooked white fish. Fish - whether cooked, raw, human-grade tinnned, should really only be an occasional treat, not a regular occurrence.

A couple of possible solutions and trickeries:

1) not sure whether you have tried fish-flavoured complete cat food, e.g. Smilla tuna or other brands that do a complete cat food with a high fish content.

2) Make some tuna water - get a tin of tuna, a tuppaware box, decant tuna into tuppaware, top with water and put in the fridge to infuse. Then use that water to drizzle on to the food that he might otherwise drag his paws to eat to see whether he can be tricked into liking "meaty" meals. Should it work, then simple use less and less of the tuna water until he eats the meaty food by itself

3) considering that he eats dry food, crush that kibble up and coat the wet food you want him to eat to see whether he can be tricked to eat other food that way

Re: Fish and Tuna

At the moment he has fish every day. I have tried giving him fish pouches but he wont eat much and I have also tried putting the dry food over the wet.

Is fish really not good for him then? Now I am worrying

Re: Fish and Tuna

The problem with fish is that it contains more phosphorus than calcium, even when you feed fish with bones like sardines, and it should be the other way around. Also, humans are no longer advised to eat fish often, especially not daily, because of its high mercury content (tuna is particularly dangerous, sardines are a better choice). But I imagine the actual mercury content would depend on what white fish you're buying. The smaller, the better is the rule.

Re: Fish and Tuna

was always told not to feed tuna to much due to mercury content but i give as a odd treat . And a odd tin of mackeral in tom sauce as he loves them. as a odd treat its not a prob. Avoid feeding solely on fish as not suitable for cats as doesnt carry there nutritional content needed. Have you tried applaws the fishey brands are good with a high fish content and chicken is quite liked by many also contains vits needed.

Re: Fish and Tuna

Acana Pacifica goes down really well with our two, especially the one who has an obvious preference for fish-flavoured stuff

Re: Fish and Tuna

Thanks, I will try some of your suggestions and keep the fish and tuna for treats. He wil just have to get used to not having it so often. I am also going to try him with some better quality dry food so he gets some goodness from that even ifhe doesn't eat much wet food.
