very thin cat

Hi sorry to be a pest, putting loads of posts on here about a cat we have just been given back after 20 months. We have her mother.

The owner has got rid of her because although she is litter trained she keeps using stairs as a toilet (for both).

I went to collect her today and was shocked by how thin she was, her back end is like a skeleton, she is a long haired cat, and her tail looks like a degus, very thin with just a bit of hair on it.

The owner said she got stressed at xmas and started losing hair when she put xmas tree up, thats also when the toilet issue started.

She also has bald patches around her neck where they've had a flea collar on her.

She hasnt been done which I think could have stressed her out each time she came on heat so am looking into getting that done this week, but not sure vet will do it in her current state.

Other then seeing a vet which I will do, can anyone say what could be causing the stress.

Is the thiness likely to be down to worms?

Is the loss of fur likely to be a reaction to fleas?

Firstly well done for taking this poor cat back, many would have declined.I have to be honest and say that to give any "reasons" for her current state would just be guess work.I agree a lot of her problems could be related to her not being neutered, flead properly and poss not wormed. From what you have said about her prev owner stress could also be a factor, but since you are taking her to your vet I would do this as soon as poss.and get professional advice.Good luck with her ,I hope you manage to sort out all her probs, and are able to find her the loving home she deserves.

Re: very thin cat

Agree with what's already been said and to be honest she sounds to have been sooo neglected in her last home quite frankly I would take what I was told with a pinch of salt! I'm not convinced all her ailments can be solely due to 'stress' !

Cases of inappropriate elimination can also have a medical basis - in fact this is far more likely and should have ruled out first by her last owner. Could well have been triggered by something like a UTI or a digestive problem.

Certainly a vet visit with full bloodwork and urinalysis. Plenty of TLC and a good quality food! I'm sure she'll come on in leaps and bounds!

Re: very thin cat

So sorry to hear about your cat, it is so distressing to see a cat that youve bred in this condition. I just wanted to say that I would want to quarantine her until you have had her to the vets and had all the various blood tests done, the last thing that you want is to introduce something nasty to your other cats.

Re: very thin cat

Do take her to the vets as soon as for a check up and to arrange for her spaying. I would assume they haven't bothered having her boosters done since they got her? Her being unneutered is probably one of the main reasons she is underweight if she has been calling consistently. Just curious - has she had kittens? She probably will need worming and some flea treatment. But lots of TLC and decent food should bring her around in time.

We expect photos and updates!!

Re: very thin cat

Shocking that people can abuse and neglect to such an extent. Well done for taking her back. Good luck and keep us updated.

Re: very thin cat

Her first night was a success, shes so excited to see us this morning, fleas are dead woohooooo!!

Her owner has been in touch saying how upset she is she had to let her go, and has tried every shop flea treament under the sun grrrrrr. One dose of front line and she is fine.

She still hasnt eaten much, wanting to drontal her this morning, but dont want to waste the tablet, will try tuna see if that works.

Im sure its worms, her back end is so thin, and if shes had fleas for any length of time, no wonder shes lost her fur.

Shes also used the litter no bother.
