Re: Geriatric cat

She likes dry food, although I prefer her to eat mainly wet these days....so I was trying to give her a treat while helping her out with her stiff joints. She only ate small amounts of it, so it could be completely coincidental, but it did seem to tie in with the night time vomit sessions.
The stool was pale and creamy, very soft or nearly liquid in places....suggesting gall bladder issues as you mention Ianthi???

Re: Geriatric cat

No, more a case of the stool passing sooo quickly through her system effectively the colouring 'phase' through addidition of bile acids, is bypassed!

Conversely with a 'good' diet ( no allergens that can generate a bad reaction etc ) much darker, firmer, less frequent stools are produced!

I would stop giving the RC and see what the response is!

Re: Geriatric cat

Hopefully Nellie will be back to her normal self soon .Its bad enough when our younger furbabes are unwell, but some how it always seems so sad when its the pensioners As for the "dire rear" I cant take stake a claim to that ,I picked it up from hobbs and thought it was so very apt and a lot easier to spell

Re: Geriatric cat

Ianthi.....I stopped the RC about a week ago.
She does seem a little better this morning, and more interested in food although she did not eat much. I will cook her up some fresh chicken in a minute, she only likes it fresh and warm, not cold from the fridge. Sigh.
The stool was much more pale than I would expect just from a fast transit, suggestive to me of Steatorrhea. Having poked around the garden yesterday and cleaned it all up ( nice job! ) I will keep an eye for any fresh production and if it reappears will bring a little present to the vet!

Re: Geriatric cat

Well, although she had seemed a little brighter and had eaten quite a bit of plain chicken last night and again today....she is now back at the vet to be put on a drip.
She wandered downstairs and outside to the garden so I watched her closely. First she had a big drink from some rainwater, then she went into the border and I heard ( and smelt!! ) explosive diarrhoea. Poor little thing then staggered back inside and promptly threw up a belly load of water and undigested chicken so I took her straight back in to the vet.

Awww little sweetheart As foul as it sounds did you take a swab for them to check? Does she have some sort of tummy virus maybe? Storm and Benji send lots of love her way! xxx

Re: Geriatric cat

Sorry to hear this but hopefully she'll feel a lot better with the fluids. How is she normally when at the vets?

I agree about the stool-the strong odour does suggest something like infection and hopefully they will carry out a fecal samle while she's there and pin it down. Any others showing any symptoms? Of course if she goes outside....

How long are they keeping her?

Re: Geriatric cat

The stool was a puddle mixed in with earth, so not really much chance for a sample, but I am sure she will oblige again at the vet's. Should I specifically request that they check the sample, or not at this stage?
She is not too keen on the vet, which cat is?, but TBH she is really quite weak so don't think she will be too distressed. He will probably want to keep her in overnight, that seems standard. Unfortunately I am in work all day now till 9.30, otherwise I would ask him to set up a cage here at home for her...might do that tomorrow....but then again, she may rest better at the vet.
I am trying not to panic, to believe it is something routine and that she will perk back up quickly..but at this age I don't think you can really be certain of that.

Re: Geriatric cat

Yes PP I would definitely ask them to check the stool, though I'd be surprised if they didn't as a matter of course anyway, but just in case!

Please don't worry too much - I honestly don't think it's anything more serious than infection of some sort! The bloodwork showed nothing alarming at any rate. Deyhydrated cats can make cats look and feel awful and it's amazing how they perk up when rehydrated, so I wouldn't worry too much about appearances at this stage.

Fingers crossed she'll be much better soon! Am off out for the pm so not around!
