Foul smelling faeces in 13 wk old kitten

Hi Everyone

I'm new here and was hoping for a bit of advice regarding my 13 week old male Siberian kitten.
We've had him just over a week and he's settled really well. He's eating and drinking lots, seems to have a healthy enough appetite and is urinating and pooing frequently.
The breeder fed him on a variety of foods in order to avoid the kittens being fussy eaters. He's also been fed on the raw diet.
Currently we are feeding him two pouches of Whiskas Junior with a small handful of Whiskas Kitten Complete with each pouch. Normally, his food is refreshed twice a day, although he has never totally emptied his bowl.
His litter is Worlds Best Cat Litter and it seems to clump really well, although his poo has occasionally been quite soft (although clearly not runny), but this could be that we've been emptying the tray very soon after he's been in it. He's also had the odd occasion where parts have stuck to his tail, this might imply it's a bit too soft surely?
Thing is, it absolutely reeks. Much more that I would expect it to. We can smell it from the next room before he's even come out of the tray and the smell lingers for a very long time afterwards, even with the windows open and an air purifier going.
He's only a tiny kitten, what on earth will it be like when he's fully grown? Does anyone have any suggestions regarding changing his food? We have hesitated up until now because we don't want to cause his tummy any more upset. Is it likely he'll get used to the Whiskas and the smell will settle down? He also suffers with wind too.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Foul smelling faeces in 13 wk old kitten

My boys came as kittens on Whiskas and had a similar problem. We've tried a bunch of different foods over time and they are currently on Bozita/Smilla and Smilla/Grau (naturally they like different things just to keep me on my toes) with either Applaws or Orijen dry food. They are less stinky but not close to what I expected the odour to be. They get a bit of raw food and that seems to help.

We don't mind too much about the odour now as they are being toilet trained so we no longer have to run to clean the litter box

Toilet training? Sounds interesting!
I'm wondering if I should be giving either just dry, or wet food. Perhaps the current combo is too rich? Perhaps I was being naive about the smell, but it's definitely gag worthy. I'm pretty hardy too, I grew up in a family of dog breeders!
Perhaps some of the dry food with some tuna mixed in? I think it must be the wet food causing it. I'd hope that would be lighter on his tum.

Have you spoken to his breeder - you should have a chat with her/him as they should be able to reassure you. Sometimes after a few days in their new home a kitten may have soft poohs because of all the changes i.e. the move/change of water etc.

I believe the raw diet does help cut down on the smell but you should need to ensure he has the right balance of nutrients etc but there are plenty of folk on here who could advise you accordingly.

If you are really concerned you could pop him along to the vet for a quick once over to put your mind at rest.

Would love to see a photo!

I think food has a lot to do with it. My two were fed on felix and go cat before they came to me and their poo really did reek. It took a while but they're now on Schmusy and RC / Orijen which are meant to be much better quality (apart from the RC) and its alot lot better. I also use OKO Cats Best litter which traps smell really well. If you do change his food, do it really slowly so it doesn't upset his tummy. Also beware of feeding just tuna or complimetary foods. You want a high meat content complete food - have a look at Hobbs's list.
Hope you end up with a stink free home soon

If I fed him tuna alongside the Whiskas dry complete food, would that be ok?

Re: Foul smelling faeces in 13 wk old kitten

Hi welcome to the forum.Firstly I have to say your kitten is gorgeous, who could believe he would smell bad
What did the breeder feed him on.You say it was a variety of foods. What lead you to whiskas? Have you read the a-z lists compiled by our own food guru hobbs A-Z of wet food for cats A-Z of dry food for cats .Most of the members here on pf tend to feed wet food and a high meat content one at that, such as Grau, smilla,Bozita and if dry is fed it is usually a grain free such as Orijen or Applaws. While Whiskas does provide everything your kitten needs it is not one of the best available. As I think you have discovered what goes in the cat ,can be responsible for the smell.I would try switching your kitten on to a good, high meat content wet food, adding it very slowly and gradually by mixing a small amount to the normal food and gradually increasing that and decreasing the original food until eventually you are feeding only the new food.Hope this helps.

Tuna should only be fed as a treat very occasionally and preferrably in water/oil not brine.

It most likely is just a food thing, but I do know really stinky poo usually means a parasite problem. If he hasn't been wormed, he should be checked--he could also have something less noticeable. Hopefully not, but it's worth a check if it keeps up.

He's absolutely stunning, by the way!

Re: Foul smelling faeces in 13 wk old kitten

Thanks again for the replies, he was wormed last week alongside his vaccination but obviously will get him checked when I take him to be microchipped.
I'll have a look at the list of the cat foods and see what I can come up with locally. For those who said to try the different wet foods with a higher meat content, would that be by itself or with a dry (non complete) food to accompany it?

Re: Foul smelling faeces in 13 wk old kitten

Ok, he's just pooed again and it was in many parts all around the litter tray. It looked a lot looser than it has been - I tipped the entire contents of the tray away. As I did so, there was a small amount of litter stuck behind and I'm sure there was a bit of pinky blood on it. He's currently purring on my lap so seems happy enough, but is this something to worry about?
I'm wondering what to give him to eat which will calm his tummy, I'm so confused! Obviously the plan will be to change him from Whiskas to a better food, but what should I do in the short term? He's due to go to the vet at the end of the week.
