IBD in 7 month old Kitten
My kitten has just been diagnosed with IBD, the poor thing has ben suffering since I rescud him and after trying all the norm ie chicken, rice etc, I finally got a poo sample done, nothing has come back to show parasites etc and the vet beleives it is IBD.
I am going to try some Hills DD food but really dont know what to do, he is a wonderful friendly and crazy kitten who looks the picture of health. Reading more about this but would love to hear from others who's cat has been diagnosed with this xx |

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
Hi Esab!
'True' IBD can only be diagnosed via biopsy - X-Ray and ultrasound can show up intestinal thickening. I have a much older cat with IBD whose currently also on Hills d/d with good results and we believe he's allergic to beef/grains.Your kitten sounds a bit young to have this so I suspect your vet means it in the generic sense, having ruled out parasitic causes. Do you know which ones he tested for? Just out of interest what have you been feeding him since you've had him and what were the symptoms? Many cats have a bad reaction to grains for instance. Since d/d is a novel protein it should manage to firm him up if diarrhea was a problem, owing to a food allergy. |

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
going to ask for a printout then research a bit more, I have tried so many different foods, royal canin sensitivity, orijen, chicken breast, rice, james wellbeloved.
Its getting unmanagable now, got kids and constantly cleaning the floor after him, hopefully should get the D/D in the next day or so. |

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
Esab - . Did you do the switch over of food very gradually? I'm surprised at the RC Sensitive since lots of people have had success with this.
With persistent diarrhea like this I would also be very suspicious of infections like TF for instance for which a special test has to be run. It have become more common in UK than previously. I would speak to the vet about ruling this out. Do you know if any of his litter mates have the same symptoms? Has the vet prescribed a course of antibiotics at any stage? The other thing is that I've heard in true IBD cases that with switching to a raw diet symptoms virtually disappeared - but I'd make sure all the above had been discounted first. |

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
Hi I did switch over gradually but maybe not gradually enough, should be receiving DD today / tomorrow, how gradually would you recommend the switch.
I have noticed though he cant tolerate wet food, I have tried applaws alongside his dry and it made the problem so much worse. What is TF? I dont know anything about his litter mates unfortunately, he has been precribed 2 courses of antibiotics though with no improvement (however it was a nightmare to get anything down him) Please can you give me more info re raw diet? How is your cat with IBD, what has been the course of action with you? Thanks Emma |

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
TF is Tri-Foetus and quite hard to diagnose Tritrichomonas foetus infection in cats My cat was checked for it but it came back negative thankfully but he has only just recently started having normal poo's but in his case dried food made it much worse, he was almost normal on hills i/d wet with a top of Diasynal as when needed as I found Pro Kolin made him worse, hope you get him sorted though as it's not much for you or the cat.

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
Sorry thought I'd included the link for TF.
Tritrichomonas foetus infection in cats I'd certainly rule this or other infections out first! The longer this goes unidentified and treated the higher the risk of developing true IBD owing to the prolonged inflammation regardless of the cause. Here's a link outlining the benefits of raw. More information in the stickes here. Feeding Your Cat: Know the Basics of Feline Nutrition :: healthy cat diet, making cat food, litter box, cat food, cat nutrition, cat urinary tract health) Our cat is a more advanced case and at present I rotate between Hills i/d and d/d. Now I've ordered Grau and will see how he goes with that! |

just an update and got the results back today....negative.
he has been on hills D/D for the last few weeks showing slight improvement, not as much leaking but his stools are still very runny and he is sometimes gassy when he goes Loosing the will as I find it so unfair on the kids as well as the cat having to put up with this ![]() Please help!! |

Re: IBD in 7 month old Kitten
What did they test for ESAB? Did the include Gardia and TF?
What did your vet suggest as the next course of action? Have they mentioned an elimination diet if they have ruled out an underlying medical problem? |
