Possibility of a urinary infection...

in a cat fed on only wet food?

What are the chances? My neutered 10 month old boy I am a little worried about. He eats only wet food at the moment (though was fed some dry for at least the first 4 months of his life, though never solely dry) and he does drink occasionally too.

I don't REALLY know why I am suspecting it. I think its because he tends to do a little wowl before he goes to the toilet. Not as he is weeing though, but as he is on his way to the litter box. He is generally a very wowly cat anyway, he wowls when somebody leaves the house and goes and sits there, he will sit on his cat tree and wowl, so its not unusual for him to do it in general.

I would say his wee's are okay... I guess some are smaller than usual, and I have noticed some are a tiny bit bubbly on the top. I have seen that as a symptom of a possible urinary infection alongside lots of other things which he definitely doesn't have...

What will the vet do to test for one? Will the need a urine sample?

Re: Possibility of a urinary infection...

A urine sample will show up infection or crystals/stones. He will be washing his pants alot more if he has a problem, but if he is haveing problems with a blockage rather than infection it can come on very quickly so I would be getting a test done asap.

One of our's is a stone former & was on wet food all his life but has been on the S/O dry since & fine he also has cystaid pills.

What can I look out for with regards to his wee. He isn't cleaning his downstairs area any more than usual and he is running around absolutely fine.

Re: Possibility of a urinary infection...

If he has cystits there will be blood in it & he will be showing discomfort, if he has the start of a blockage or crystals he will be going to the loo a lot but not peeing much if any at all & if he does & gets to bad he will be crying out very loudly, but after saying this Scutter showed no signs anything was wrong untill 2 am one sunday morning

Re: Possibility of a urinary infection...

This is something I think rings alarm bells to all who know how bad UTI's ,blockages ect can be.I dont know what I would be looking for but I think if something worried me in the "pee" department I would err on the side of caution and ask for an opinion from my vet,but then I'm a bit of a worrier

I will keep an eye out. There is definitely no blood in the urine, they would be straight at the vets if I ever saw that.

He hasn't been to the loo without going yet that I've seen (been home pretty much solidly the last 3 days, bliss!) and he definitely is not crying whilst going to the loo (just moaning all the time otherwise!) I'm lucky in that he tends to choose to go when I go, so I get to observe )

Will definitely keep an eye out. He has such a sad face I always assume he is sad!
