vet advice

Thought I'd share. A new vets has opened nearby. My usual is miles away and my dad normally comes with me. He wasn't there I needed a vet appt so thought I'd try the one up the road.

Cat has been a bit off colour pooping out of tray then last night had diarrhoea so wanted check up.

Advice

I'm feeding him wrong. Apparantly I should be feeding him dried food with wet only as a very very occassional treat. I questioned this as normal vet says opposite and got told it's better for them. Feed a high quality one such as hills, Royal Canin or IAMs.

Apparently I should never ever rotate food brands they should be on one food forever. Perhaps he'd like to tell that to my cats who get bored of a brand after about 3 weeks and stop eating it so I have to rotate a few normally.

Then he told me it was important to feed cats a diet that is high in fibre. I was a bit baffled by that one.

At least it was cheap. Cat got an injection which should hopefully sort out tum.

The only good advice he gave me I thought was to feed him cooked chicken for a couple of days.

What do you think of his advice?

I'm going back to my normal vet stick with what you know in future.

Re: vet advice

A diet high in fibre? I think he's thinking of rabbits

TBH that advise goes against everything anyone here will tell you and as you say your vet.

I wouldn't want to be feeding a cat, a boy cat especially on mainly dry food...but lots of vets still think it's best for their teeth.

Actually there's an article in the Vet Times at the moment, how cats will naturally choose to change foods as they choose their food on the nutritional content (and apparently not taste as normally thought) and to constantly eat the same food would mean in the wild they're not getting a balance of nutrients so they will chop and change to ensure their diet is balanced.

Re: vet advice

he def said a high fibre diet maybe thats why he's recommending dried foods with loads of fillers in them.

Just makes me so mad.

When I challenged him he was incredibly patronising. It's no wonder people feed their cats crap and then quote vets advice. he prob recommends kittens are rehomed at 8 weeks too.

Why don't you print off Deborah Zoran's article 'The carnivore connection' and post it to him? With or without signing it!!

Re: vet advice

Just out of interest, how old was this vet? It's quite 'remarkable' advice also considering your cat was male and not female!

At one practice I used to go to, the vet there refused to stock any dry food owing to the high number of urinary blockages she attributed to the dry food diets the cats were invariably on. Once I overheard her heatedly defending her decision when approached by one of the reps from a well-known feline food manufacturer!

Hi Cloudygirl, Just out of interest.... Was this vet part of a large chain of vets(without naming a particular vet that is found all over the UK beginning with 'M')!!!!

It's just that I had a particularly bad experience with one vet and I WILL
NEVER use them again!!

Re: vet advice

Vet was young late 20s/early 30s.

Large chain but I don't think the one you are talking about.

As I said will NOT be going there again. INjection worked though puddy cat is super perky and diarrhoea free today. I'm still the poorly one lol.

I'm pretty sure he's never owned a cat. Like I can dictate what they eat. They just turn their nose up if they don't want it. Jo is so stubborn that he'd go for days without eating if I didn't feed him what he wanted.
