talking about it on here and getting feedback from others in the know is such a massive relief for me to know it's a common condition and that i've made the right choices with her diet and meds

thanks to everyone for the comments i am very glad i found this forum what an absolute god send
Firstly, I doubt at this stage if she suffers from any stomach acid ( usually evidenced by lick smacking, lack of appetite, vomiting foamy liquid ) so I'd hold off on the meds until she shows any of these symptoms.

UK vets unfortunately very often have a very dismal and non pro-active approach where CRF is concerned but some are better than others. It's one of the reasons Helen started that webside, having seen how more advanced things are in the US. A relative who worked there found the same thing! Frankly I would just ignore these negative comments for now. Also there are vets out there who are much better with the conditon should you need to change in the future!

Glad to hear BP is OK though do get regular checks!

Although you may not be entirely impressed with the attitude of your vet....she has actually been pretty proactive in her advice regarding meds and food so I think she has done pretty well!
It would also be a good policy to encourage your cat to drink plenty of fluids....some cats like bowls of stale rain water outside, some like to drink from your glass, others will take to a water fountain. I make home made chicken broth with free carcasses from the butcher, I also offer watered down yoghurt or creme fraiche as a treat and both are keenly lapped up. You can also add warm water to any wet food the cat eats.

Re: very early stage of kidney disease in my 12yr old

we will hold off the pepto bismo until she shows symptoms thanks for the advice

the vets we are using is called parkvets in the uk

i am very pleased and relieved that an accurate diagnosis has been made at such an early stage, we ironically saw the same vet tonight when my rabbit Sooty sustained a corneal ulcer which i suspect came from Garfy lashing out at him, he's got some antibiotic eye drops and it's not a deep ulcer which is good news

as always thanks for the comments from everyone its most appreciated

Re: very early stage of kidney disease in my 12yr old

if it helps i had an elderly cat, at the time she was 17, and she was diagnosed with renal failure. because she didnt like the k/d the vet prescribed a powder called ipatitine which i sprinkled on her ordinary food, which she liked.
it gave her another 18 months, but dont go by that though. tabitha my cat was very elderly in the first place.
