mistake with vaccination - advice/experience of this?

hi everyone, i need some advice/reassurance !!

I took my babies (9 week old kittens) to the vets today to have their first set of innoculations. I was talking to the vet about their diet etc and she was asking how they had been and so I wasnt paying too much attention to what she was doing, but she had given one of the kittens their innoculation.

But then she was loading the syringe for the second kitten's innoculation and she said "oh, which one did i just do" !! I didnt know as I hadn't seen her actually put the syringe in!!!

But then she said it was fine, she knew which one, as one was at the back of the travel basket still...then she took out this kitten and did the injection.

She seemed sure she knew which one, so I didnt think too much of it while I was in there, but now that I am back home I am wondering if she really did know!! And because I didnt see her actually do the injection I'm now really worried in case she did the same one twice and didnt do the other at all??

Has anyone had this happen before? What should I do? What would happen if one of them had 2 jabs - could it hurt her? And if the other one hasnt had a jab, when she has her second one in 3 weeks, will this be enough to protect her in any way? Im now panicking ... please help!

Re: mistake with vaccination - advice/experience of this?

I have never had this happen to me, but I think like you I would be a bit concerned especially about the vets attitude. If one kitten did get 2 doses then I think I would be worried, especially if it was a live virus. I would phone the vets and ask them to contact the manufacturer of the vaccine and ask them what to expect if that happened. If they come back and say nothing it's fine, then at least you can put your mind at rest, if not then you will be forewarned with what signs to look for. The one that didn’t get a dose at all, I would imagine if they just get one half in 3 weeks time, won’t be properly covered.
Fingers crossed she was paying attention and has only done them all once.

I too would be more worried about one cat having two shots rather then one having none (well I would if it were a dog), Keep a very close eye on the kitties and if you are at all concerned seek veternary advise.

Oh god, thats very careless of her( I don't know of the effects of possible double dosing, though if you are worried, I agree with Saikou, you could ring and speak to the vets about your concerns. My vets always have a spare basket in the room when doing litters of kittens, they get them out of our basket, inject them and put them in their basket.

thanks guys - have called the vets practice to speak to the vet but couldn't speak to her straight away. am waiting for a call back.

as if it isn't hard enough to look after kittens, without adding this to the list of worries!

Well being as it is the vet that has caused you this worry - I hope you don't have to wait too long - if they don't call back pretty quickly I would bombard them with calls ever ten minutes or so.
Thinking of you

I don't know if this is possible but can you pull the fur back on the kitten's neck and see if there is a mark or anything? Or can you smell something on the neck? (don't know if the vaccine smells) but just a thought.

Re: mistake with vaccination - advice/experience of this?

depending on what vacc it was, if it was Tricat, Fevaxyn Pentofel or the Tricat Felv. i think the Felv should be ok but might make them a bit lethargic. i have no idea about the reaction of an overdose of the Tricat. as far as i know they are not live but they will give the immune system a knock! best keep a close eye on them and if you can get some blood work done from the vets to check the antibodies to see if they can work out that both of them have been vaccinated properly. other wise you will have to guess and start all over with both of them in 3 weeks time. I gave my new Bengal queen an extra Felv this year with her Fevaxyn Pentofel combo so she had a first 28-1-08 then a second 18-2-08 and then another Fevaxyn Felv on it's own 15-9-08 just to be sure as some of the flu vaccs are being a bit funny this year i've read. they are now suggestion a 3rd for some puppies now too. If you are unsure ring a different vets OR contact the manufacture of the vaccine be it Fort Dodge or Nobivac. They will be happy to assist you.

Re: mistake with vaccination - advice/experience of this?

right done some reading that might be helpful.

the tricat has this listed:
4.10 Overdose (symptoms, emergency procedures, antidotes), if necessary

At ten-fold overdose, a slight painful swelling may be observed at the injection site for 4-10 days.

A slight transient rise in temperature (up to 40.8°C) may occur for 1-2 days.

In some cases general discomfort, coughing, sneezing, transient lethargy and reduced appetite may be observed for a few days post vaccination.

the Felv has this listed:

5.9 Overdose

No reactions other than those listed in Section 5.4 are observed after an overdose administration.

5.4. Undesirable effects, frequency and seriousness

Transient and small thickening or nodule, approximately 5 - 10 mm in size, may be observed at the injection site and disappear within 2 to 6 weeks without treatment.

Where Nobivac FeLV has been used to reconstitute Nobivac Tricat prior to inoculation, a small, painless nodule at the site of vaccination is frequently observed. It can persist for up to 13 days post-inoculation. In the rare event of hypersensitivity reaction following vaccination, administer an antihistamine, corticosteroid or adrenaline without delay and by the most-immediate route.

i hope this is helpful and puts your mind at rest a bit. but still you need to work out who has had what!

Re: mistake with vaccination - advice/experience of this?

had your vet checked the kitten again before she did the injection again she mite well of felt a little lump where the 1st injection was put, i had this with one of my litters once and my vet said he could feel which ones had been injected and which ones hadnt, so all mine were ok, it is always best to check any worrys with the vet as we dont know what the side affects could be and best kept an eye on just in case, hopefully your vets got it right, but it is easy to do when you have litters specialy if they look the same, i always take extra baskets to transfer each kitten when they have their injections now, just in case as it was still a worry in case the vet was wrong, i do hope the little one is ok,
