Unsure daily amount cat food

Hi,

I have a 5.3 kg Russian Blue kitteh 1 year old and after a visit to the vet I was recommended to try a different more natural cat food, as yes he needs to grow a tad more. I was feeding him whiskas 3 times a day alongside biscuits and water. I bought encore cat food (it looks yummy) and it doesn't recommend the daily intake as to what he needs. Can anyone help me?

Maybe 2-3 cans + 70g biscuits...

Does this get his total nutritional needs per day?

Re: Unsure daily amount cat food

I think encore wet food is a complimentary food (some def.are)so will not provide all the nutrients your cat needs without a good quality kibble added. If your cat likes wet food why not cut out the kibble and just feed wet food.Have you read the A-Z lists they are full of all the information you will need to feed a good, balanced diet. Here are the links. A-Z of wet food for cats A-Z of dry food for cats Good luck with your search.I'm sure hobbs will be along with lots of useful advice, this will keep you going till she gets here.

Re: Unsure daily amount cat food

5.3 kg for a russian blue i think is quite large...... they tend to be slightly sleeker ...(i could be wrong) my boy is 5.5kg at 15 months and hes huge lol!
ive never tried encore cat food but the reccomended amount for alot of wet cat foods is about 300/400g a day! (depending on the cat food)

im sure guru hobbs will be along shortly to help you out

Re: Unsure daily amount cat food

Thank you for the responses and I'm on the guru hobbs pet forum A-Z now and all the best brands are German, is there anyway at all you can order these that you know of? Or is it best to seek for a UK cat food (which don't appear to match their standards at all which is a real shame)?

You can order most of them from zooplus.co.uk, and it's free delivery over £19 so always good to stock up!

This is not a complete food, I so wish it was more clearly marked, I wonder how many people feed this as the only food? I also recall hobbs saying that a very similar product was unbalanced in terms of it's calcium & phosphorous ratio, so I suspect Encore is too.

As the others have already pointed out - the encore is a complementary food and as such doesn't contain all the nutrients your cats need in the long term.

However, even if it was a complete food, I think you would be feeding too much considering that you are also providing 70g of dry food, which (although I don't know what dry brand you are feeding) is probably the daily ratio of food in dry without also taking into account the fact that you are feeding wet food.

Personally, I would suggest you save yourself some possible future heartache (those shredded meat type foods not only tend not to be as nutritious as other food but they also tend to create fussy eaters) and get your cat to eat pate foods. You can get some good foods on zooplus but also have a look at Leonardo, Lily's Kitchen and Nature's Menu (who have taken the sugars out of their recipe) in the A-Z.

Also, I would suggest you don't get hung up on just one brand. No one brand is "perfect" (well, there are some near perfect foods but they aren't easily had over here) so by feeding 3 or 4 different brands of the same quality you cover all the bases. Also, if they change a recipe or stop making a particular food you are not scrambling around for other foods you cat might eat.
