Merson has been prone to these over the years - usually when his immune system needs a boost - and his 'tears' can be a bit brown'ish looking. I know some ulcers are really obvious & sore looking but you only know Merson has got one on the go when he 'slightly' favours the eye.

I'm just chucking another suggestion into the ring.....

I still stand by the line "If in doubt, see the Vet!!"

As some around here already know........
Could well be MB! Has Merson had herpes outbreaks? Like you mention it's good you have a means of knowing what's going on with him.

That's what I meant about having the source clearly identified! OP needs to do this!

My new vet mooted this point when he saw Merson about 6 weeks ago which surprised me as none of my previous vets had ever mentioned it!

Merson developed cat flu when he was about 4mths old - despite having the jabs!! - and his first corneal ulcer popped up about 3 weeks after he started to recover. The vet did 3 ops to try and resolve but no joy & were ready to remove the eye. As a last resort, I did some homeopathic research and proceeded to stick a high-dose combo of Silicia & Arnica down his neck. This seemed to do the trick because the ulcer started to heal (MUCH to the vets surprise btw!!!) and eventually, after about 4 weeks of this, disappeared altogether.

The cat flu compromised his immune system and when he is a bit 'low' his eye can play up. A few doses of the above combo usually sorts it out very quickly. He then gets his echinacea top ups for a few days and then he's back on form.

It has been this way for 10 years........

You mean they actually operated on an eye ulcer? Never heard things going this far.

Well done you for persevering and discovering a treatment which worked and saved his eye! No mean feat and you should be commended. I sincerely hope they've adopted your treatment protocol for use with other clients - no doubt they have!!

You've just reminded me about the echinacea for one of mine. Have you tried L-lysine? Stops virus replicating and is very effective.

I've had two cats had to have this op. The ulcer is abraded then the third eye lid is stiched over the ulcer which helps with the healing process. It doesnt always work though, in Cassie's case it did heal the ulcer (although she went on to develop an ulcer in the other eye), but with Poppy it didnt work, and she had to have the eye removed in the end.

He was only a baby and I wasn't giving in without a fight. The above op appears to be quite common as another vet l been to (and since discarded ) mentioned it when he was checking Merson over on one of his visits. I remember thinking, back then, that humans have a tendancy towards ulcers when our own immune systems are a bit depleted & run down. Using the logic that Merson's system must be running on empty after his bout of flu, I looked for a way to 'help' him to heal thus the Arnica. Silica is recommended by the homeopathic fraternity as being effect for ulcers. Hence the combo.

The vet were impressed with the recovery of the eye, not so impressed when I told them how I had done it.....

Homeopathy.... Still a taboo word in so many quarters....

I hadn't heard of L-lysine until joining this forum. I will look into that and add it to my little stash of bottles. Thank you for the info.
