My old cat has runny poo and is very lethargic

Hi, my 16 year old cat is not too good at the moment
She had some antibiotics for cystitis last week and now she is suffering from runny poo's and is very out of sorts. There was a little amount of blood in one of her poo's but I thought this may be due to her straining? I've held off taking her to emergency vets as yet as didn't like to bother them if it was something trivial and wondered if ne1 had any ideas out there? My wife is really stressed which in turn makes me sad, so any help would be appreciated

you should be able to give them a ring if you're super worried i'm sure they wouldn't mind and they won't charge you for over the phone advice. sounds like puss might need some medical attention. blood in the stool if it's runny wouldn't be from the cystitis straining and may be the sign of something more serious. Just give the emergency vets a ring and they can give you better advice. hope puss gets better soon!!

Re: My old cat has runny poo and is very lethargic

Hi, thanks for your replies. She's had a sleep for about an hour and seems a lot brighter, before her sleep her ears were really warm and now she's cooled down considerably. In true cat style she even made fuss for food!!! She's back on sofa now snoozing again so I'll keep an eye on her "movements". My vet opens in morning for a few hours so if needs be I can take her then

keep a note on food and water intake and check the poos, which i'm sure you're already doing. also keep an eye on the colour of the gums and the hydration levels, you can do this by pinching the skin and seeing how long it takes to go back in place. if it's a worryingly long time you should really get puss to the emergency vets as it can be a sign of dehydration. if the temp goes up again be wary and maybe try to ring the vets to see if you should come in then or wait til the morning.

Blood in poo isn't usually too serious. There might be some information in this thread that is helpful to you.

Blood after poo?

That was one of my cats, he was constipated though a bit of wet food sorted him out.

To me it sounds as though the antibiotics have probably killed some of the good bacteria in the gut, a bit of live natural yoghurt may help

Re: My old cat has runny poo and is very lethargic

Hi, many thanks for all your replies. Just to update you, she's a lot better now. I called the vets and they said that it could have been a bad reaction to coming off the antibiotics. She's eating fine and drinking more water than usual so all is happy in Stumpy world
