Eye scratching

I just wondered if anyone knows if its ok to just bathe the area in warm water, or a bit of warm salt water.
My cat keeps scratching her eye and rubbing it.
The only time it seems to soothe is when i just lightly rub my finger on it for her.
It does not look infected no redness, no puffiness, no squinting no gunk oozing out either.

Re: Eye scratching

Perhaps she has got something in it that has gone behind the eyelid? Keep an eye on her and if it doesn't stop, I would get her to the vet to get her checked. She also might have scratched it on something - very difficult to tell.

Re: Eye scratching

Yes.
Boil some water and add salt, allow the water to cool and bathe the eye. I wouldn't use cotten wool as little bits of the wool may get left stuck in/around the eye, same with tissue. Best of using lint, or something simular.

Re: Eye scratching

you don't and really shouldn't bathe the eye in anything other than boiled PLAIN water not salted. cats don't have salty tears like we do. salt is good to dry an eye out if it's weeping to clean the outer area but not to flush the eye. just boiled cooled water on its own should suffice and if it doesn't clear up in a day give the vets a ring.

preventing the bacteria from forming may not be the problem. if the eye is scratched and the body is trying to repair it drying up the natural fluids in the eye is not going to help with or with out bacteria. if she's worried about bacteria forming she needs to get a prescription from the vets. if she's just trying to nurse the eye to keep it clear and let it heal then boiled water should suffice. the body will take care of the bacteria on it's own whilst flushing the eye. if there is no discharge or redness its unlikely there is a bacterial infection to begin with, boiling the water and letting it cool should be enough to get the bacteria living in the water.

also if it's a fungal infection clearing the bacteria could make it worse.

Re: Eye scratching

I have been told by a vet to use salt water to bathe an eye! Also cold tea (no milk) and for a soothing eye wash, 1 tsp of bicarb in a cup of water (previously boiled and cooled until it is just warm).

Re: Eye scratching

I would say that plain boiled water is OK, so is salted water, and cold tea is also excellent. There are quite a few options really, all equally useful.
There is also a homeopathic remedy, you use a drop of the tincture in a small bowl of water but I can't remember the name of the remedy at the moment

just so there's no confusion...not saying you can't bathe the eye in a correct water/salt(aka saline) solution EVER just saying this wouldn't be a case for it would be better with just plain water for this instance. ok?
