Yes, female cats can as well. It's a sign of stress.

Short answer is yes, they can sadly. My moggy boy used to do it when upset, usually after my daughter had been round with her dog.

Or to mark territory outside! Noticed this with mine especially when the garden had been frequented by other cats!

Yes I was going to say to mark territory...but then was thinking of just inside, which of course can be marking but then if it's inside it's a stressed kitty!

I had just submitted post when realised the same thing! Originally wasn't sure what OP meant and was thinking of my own cats' experience which is generally outside. However, I'm sure they'd do it inside as well if we had invaders-one did when another property was unoccupied, which he ( like neighbouring cats! )liked to frequent!
