Thin (emaciated) Mummy cat ...?

Okay, I know most mums get very thin when they've had kittens etc, but this latest foster cat is sooooooo thin you can feel her pelvis bones ... which is obviously not right. she has been with me for a week now and eating 3 or 4 meals a day of normal cat food that I feed all my other brood. Now I don't feel this is sufficient as she doesn't seem to be putting on much weight ...

Can you recommend a not so expensive high quality food that I can boost her up quickly with...?

One of her kittens is very small too, so off to the vets to get some Lactol to help with the feeding - they are 2 weeks old now and just opening their eyes. Will post pictures at some point.

Thank you. Clare

Re: Thin (emaciated) Mummy cat ...?

I'd take her in for a check up as soon as possible, it's not normal for her to lose weight like that and there may be an underlying problem. Hopefully she is fine, but just in case.

Re: Thin (emaciated) Mummy cat ...?

She has had a rough time before she came to me ... attacked by a dog and has a nasty healed wound on her side ... might be the problem, but she is eating and pooing normally and saw a vet at the rescue so just wondering what else I can feed her to boost her up a bit ... will take her to the vet as soon as this run of bank holidays is finished ... C x

Re: Thin (emaciated) Mummy cat ...?

Poor little soul, I am sure someone will be along to advise on best foods to feed her. I would hesitate to advise anything too high protein in case there are any underlying kidney issues, possible even in young cat

Hope all is well

Re: Thin (emaciated) Mummy cat ...?

Thank you ... will go to the local Wynnstay and get the applaws ... hopefully ... I am just worried she's not strong enough to support the 3 kits, she's lost one already, but that was frail and weak anyway ...

I will have a look at the zooplus site later today, and hopefully order some in, but want to start feeding her up today x

Claire, what are you feeding her at the moment and how much is she eating daily? How is her appetite?

It's possible she's got a medical conditon but equally likely she's not actually eating enough to sustain her current needs. She may even have worms!

I agree a vet visit ( where he can recommend a food ) but in the meantime I would definitely give her more of what you're currently feeding her for now. While I wouldn't recommend them normally dry foods tends tend to aid weight gain with the added advantage you could leave some out for her to have as and when required plus lots of water of course! At the moment I'm trying to think of a high calorie food!

Re: Thin (emaciated) Mummy cat ...?

Could it be the kittens are taking too much out of her? I know very little about cats other than the one I have but would it be possible to assist with the feeding of them until she is able to gain a little weight?

I know Lymorelynn said her queen regained condition very well after being put on a balanced raw diet....is that an option for you at all?
