Hair loss where treated with tick/flea drops

A few days ago I treated my Mikah with hartz ultra gaurd flea/tick drops on the back of her neck.

I know I've treated her before, and I'm fairly confident that it was the same brand and type.

I noticed today she has lost a significant amount of hair where I applied the drops and her fur around that area has thinned dramatically.

Should I be worried? Is this normal?

Anyone have any idea? Should I be concerned?

I would say so! Have you not had her to the vets to check her over? I would do personally.

Other than the hair loss in that spot she is fine. Her personality is just as in-my-face as always. Financially, taking her to the vet right now is only an option if you guys are convinced it's absolutely necessary for her well being. Thanks for the reply

Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

Yes, my old cat was v sensitive to flea drops- vet said it was an allergy and we avoided using drops in the future. He had a bald patch the size of a 50p at one point.

Localised hair loss and drooling are both not uncommon side effects to spot on treatments. I know somebody who runs a rescue centre and she has had a few cats get these side effects. As said above don't use the same product again and I would personally go see the vet just for reassurance more than anything. Can you not give yours a call for advice?

Good to know it's common. I'm keeping a close eye on her.

No I can't call. The receptionists will just say "we can't amswer that you'll have to make an appointment".. Ive been a returning customer for years, but it seems like no matter what they just want my money.

That's a shame, in my experience most vets here will happily ring you back to discuss things (I would still expect them to recommend coming in to see them though). Hartz isn't a commonly used treatment here and I don't know what the active chemical is, some work by being absorbed into the blood stream whilst others stay on the coat. If it is one of the latter i'd also bathe her asap.

Re: Hair loss where treated with tick/flea drops

I'll be moving soon and when I do I'll be the same vet as my sister. She says her vet offers commplementary appointments after an initial appointment to check up and make sure everything is ok. Generally, it sounds a lot friendlier.

I'm pretty sure the drops I used are absorbed into her skin, but the fur that's left where I applied them is still greesey, I'll wash it off ASAP.

in the past i have used frontline spot on. but i noticed my kitties would seem in pain after i put it on, like it was stinging them. i changed to advantage from the vets and there is no reaction!
