Re: Litter Tray to Cats ratio

I think it depends on the cats. if you have queens for instance or if you have a cat that is a bit shy or kittens or a busy house hold. I have a two story three bedroom house. one queen and one neutered female who is recovering from hip/pelvic surgery. I have two litter boxes upstairs, one at the end of the hall and one in the quiet guest room. I then have two downstairs, one under the stairs next to the tumble dryer and the other in a cubby behind the tv in the lounge. I would rather have more litter boxes then have wee in my house. I don't mind cleaning them and the litter I use doesn't smell and I clean mine every day.

Re: Litter Tray to Cats ratio

We have 8 cats and 7 large litter trays. We have more out when theres kittens though I think it all depends on the size of your house/flat and what your cats need, some are prepared to share, some arn't

Re: Litter Tray to Cats ratio

Well the 'officail' guidlines are as you have stated, one per cat and one extra, but it all depends on personal circumstances.

We have 4 cats/kittens, and one large tray in the bathroom. One of my kittens is too young to go out, so she uses the litter tray all the time. The other 3 of my cats free roam (well sumdge doesn't at the moment, because of his accident), so they generally go to the loo outdoors and only really use the tray at night.

I do have spares in case I need to leave an extra tray down.

Re: Litter Tray to Cats ratio

I have 7 cats and once had 10 trays but only 5 ever got used. So they have 5 large ones all covered and in various locations. They seem to like this layout. If I have any more cats I would dig another tray out and see how it goes.

I scoop as soon as I see a solid in the tray and completely change the litter every 2/3 days and give them a proper clean etc.... sometime more often.
