has he been wormed as that could make him want to eat more and more?

don't let him over eat or you could be back at square one. Did you speak to your vets about staying on the M/D? seems silly to take him off it if he's happy on it and eating well. It is a preventive diet as well as maintenance diet so I would have thought it would do him no harm.

Re: pepes hunger problems

hi i have never wormed any of my cats as i keep them indoors,i was told that was ok,as they tend to pick stuff up if they go out, pepe is 12 years old and lucy 11,so i have had them all this time with no problems,my problems started when pepe was diagnosed as diabetic,i dont know if its maybe down to greed,he was a very fat cat around 20 pounds, now weighing about half that, its almost like the hills is not satisfying him,i was told to try him on wd to see if that would help,he was worse so now its back to md,he is a nightmare

Oh, god you're kidding, whoever told you that has sadly mis-informed you. A cat needs worming wether it's indoors or not.
Welcome to you by the way

Re: pepes hunger problems

firstly you need to worm your cats. who ever told you not to is a bit silly.

its possible that because he's feeling better having been on the M/D that he's just full of it. There are many cats out there with eating disorders. I'm dealing with one at the moment at my partner's parent's house. he's constantly at your feet and woofs his food be it wet or dry and then wants more. we've got him on an obesity diet at the moment and he's on a strict am/pm feed only. but he still seems hungry, but really doesn't need it! We rescued him from a family that over fed him and now we're just trying to get him out of the habit. It's proving to be a nightmare though. he's going for the dog food now! the dog is intemidated by him so he lets him have it. Thankfully it's not buiscuts it's only nature diet wet so isn't too bad for him but certainly isn't doing him any weight loss favors! I think it just comes down to quality of life. Algernon is only 4yrs old so we plan on sticking to this diet with him and trying to get him back to normal again. but if you have an elderly cat over 10yrs old i would just keep him happy.

Re: pepes hunger problems

Is your cat neutered by the way ? Just ask as sometimes neutered cats can be very greedy, we have one like it here, we have to feed her separately now as she is taking everyone elses food
You definately need to get him wormed though

Re: pepes hunger problems

He might always be a gobbler, eating so fast would have been one of the factors in him gaining the weight in the first place. My dog was one of a litter of 8 and goes at every bowl as if he hasn't been fed in a week .

Good thing is you now know how important it is for his health that he keeps within healthy portion limits even if he really would like to eat twice as much.

Re: pepes hunger problems

oh i also would suggest maybe incorporating some RAW treats through the day. to supplement the hunger. As the raw food will digest differently and act as a kill for him in the wild. do your normal feeding times and then in the day when you're there give him a raw bowl once or twice a day. some chopped raw chicken or beef mince or a raw chicken wing once or twice a week. if you can get them livers and other parts can be full of protein for him to burn off slower and help satisfy him. this will also help with the diabetes as there aren't any additives or carbs feeding this way.

but please get some wormer from your vets - drontal cat(pill), milbemax(pill) and profender(spot on), i don't think i would suggest Panacur as they have never been wormed it only covers the roundworm and not the tapeworm which if it's down to worms with the over eating the tapeworm would be the culprit more so than the roundworms.

Re: pepes hunger problems

hi yes pepe is neutered, from the start at 8 weeks he was always a greedy cat, pinching the other cats food,in the end we gave in and fed him more, well half a tin of wet and a big bowl of dry,he stopped the stealing but in the end the over feeding made him diabetic, now he is a hundred times worse,he even hounds our visitors for attention thinking he will get fed,i will worm them but i havent had any problems relating to worms, now pepes bad habits have turned my wee lucabelle into a greedy monster, she used to be a grazer but now eats it all up in one go,i think she is maybe thinking pepe will steal hers,as she sees him getting told off all the time, this house is a madhouse, when whizzy died nothing has been the same including the cats behaviour
