My Mother is allergic, recommendations welcome please!

Hello, I am due to get 2 tabby rescue kittens, Im so excited so is my son, the thing is my mother is allergic. She may only visit once or twice a week, but gets very breathless when she came round when i had my old cat. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a shampoo for the cats, wipes etc. I have those sticy rollers to get the hairs of the couch/clothes etc but someone sugested that petal cleanse is a good shampoo, as it stops the build up of danders?
She can take anti-histamines but some are not as good as others, again recommendations always welcome!
I love my mum to bits and do not want her to stop coming to my house because of this, so am looking to a solution to the problem that does not entail getting rid of the kittens, cos i could never do that...EVER!

thanks ILT xx

Shampoos, wipes ect won't stop anyone being allergic to them. Apart from her medication, there's not really much you can do. Really you can't be washing the cats everytime your Mam wants to visit, it's not fair on them, especially if they don't need washing. The only suggestion is, have 1 room where the cats arn't allowed, so your Mam can sit in there when she visits.
Yea, you can build up resistance, I used to highly allercig to cat hair when I was younger, could'nt even go in my aunties house at all, even if the cat was'nt there. I have 8 of my own now, lol

Well, this is what i thought tbh, not fair on the cats! She will have to go to the doctors to see about getting some stronger tablets, and hopefully that will be okay. The cats wont be allowed in my dining/kitchen so that will have to me my 'mums room' !! Thanks

Re: My Mother is allergic, recommendations welcome please!

Firstly is she anaphylactic? if so she will need to speak to her GP before coming over as the kittens could be very dangerous to her.

this is all from my personal experience with my father's allergies.
she can get a special allergy medication from her GP. I take Telfast and it works brill with my mite, mold, rabbit and straw/hay allergies. Also bathing the cat once a month or so with a teatree bath for cats will help with the dander. but be very careful bathing kittens as they can get chilled very easily. try not to blow dry them as it will increase the saliva dander. vacuuming the house and dusting regularly before your mum comes over and also keeping some hand wash for her to wash her hand if she touches them. Explain to her not to pet the cat and then wash her hands and try not to touch her face. you can also open a window before she comes round. cat allergies are generally contact dermo problems so she would need to touch the cat. any other allergy meds (piriton, zirtek, benadryl) should help with the non contact stuffies!

here is some info on Anaphylaxis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia i only asked if you knew if your mum was anaphylactic as it's very serious and my advice wouldn't suit her if she was. I didn't want to assume she wasn't and have you take the advice and put her in danger as you didn't specify. I wasn't intending on scaring you If your mum was anaphylactic she would know and would have the proper meds for it. but i couldn't assume that she would have told you that she was so i asked. OK? sorry for the confusion.

It tends to be non contact, but will tell her to get to the doctors asap about the anaphylactic. Hopefully she is not.
Thanks x

Re: My Mother is allergic, recommendations welcome please!

My husband takes citirizine [zirtek] which he has found to be the best, but if she gets breathless, she needs to discuss that with her Dr as it might be allergy aggravated asthma. My husband has an inhaler and if he has been lazy and not washed his hands after playing with the cats he often has to have a puff on that.

It is usually the proteins in the saliva that causes irritation for allergic people, it dries and flakes, and irritates. I would be very wary of over bathing your cats but I'm sure I did read somewhere about some wipes you could use to just gently wipe the surface of their coats?

I'm not sure if it was these or something similar, and I'm afraid I haven't tried them myself so can't personally vouch for them.

You can also buy allergy nasal sprays that can be helpful too.
