Ham for humans - ok for cats?

I have discovered that Artie loves sliced sandwich ham. I have only given him a little bit so far, but when I am making the packed lunches on a morning he is trying to jump up and being very vocal. He has been like this all along, but before when I have offered him a sliver he has turned away. Yesterday, I thought I would try him again, when he was making a fuss around my feet, and couldn't believe he gobbled it down and asked for more. This morning when I offered him a sliver he swiped it out of my hand! If anyone had seen, they would think I never fed him!

Before I give him anymore, I'd like to know if its ok for him. Please can anyone help?

Re: Ham for humans - ok for cats?

I dont know about cats but Oscar has ham sometimes as a training treat, the main issue with it i would say is it has a high salt content so i certainly would restrict it to the odd small treat amount

Re: Ham for humans - ok for cats?

As it's high in salt & other nasties (especially that wafer thin cheap ham) I tend to only give a small amount very occasionally, as there's plenty of other healthier options that are just as tasty

Re: Ham for humans - ok for cats?

It is always great to discover a food that your cat can be bribed with, and ham so often comes up trumps in that respect.
However....i don't think it should be fed too frequently, you know that for humans the government has refused to set 'safe limits' for processed meats, ( that means that NO amount is deemed to be safe ) and even went as far as to warn against it for use in children's packed lunches.

Re: Ham for humans - ok for cats?

As the honourable Rainy and Simplysardonic said before me, it is fine as the occasional treat but contains salt or sometimes even sugar etc. If he likes ham, have you tried some raw pork to see whether he finds that equally appetising?

Edit: and the honourable PP!

Just to take the topic off on a slight tangent why do you not get pork flavour/flavoured cat or come to that dog food ?

Re: Ham for humans - ok for cats?

You don't have it as the main flavour meat, that's true but there is pork hiding in quite a lot of cat food....

Re: Ham for humans - ok for cats?

Every year my mum had a ham on Boxing Day, and I'd take a slice home for my cat - the only time he ever had it. These days mum comes to us and we're vegetarian.

Presumably processed chicken is okay? I want to get our cats some meat as a treat but can't handle and cook it very easily.

Same as processed ham really - processed chicken is a good occasional treat. A lot of the processed chicken I have seen contains sugar and other crap.

The best treat for them is still some raw chunky, chewy meat - e.g. beef, lamb, chicken wings, quail etc. If you cannot bear to handle raw meat, how about getting yourself some disposable vinyl etc gloves? Those might help
