Honeys first hairball ???

Hi all.....i think Honey may have had her first attempt at bringing up a hairball tonight.

I was emptying the dishwasher and she started retching and making a hoarse coughing sound..(like a child with croup)...i **** myself and turned into panicky mummy.

I crouching down rubbing her back...got a big glass of water (she loves drinking from a glass !!!!) and started talking to her...it stopped then started again.

So i grabbed mobile..rang my vets at rowe..they are great at making me feel better...she told me as long as she hadnt been outside and could of been choking on something she had picked up..it probably was a hairball.....told to give her some water....but obviously if she showed any signs of discomfort..lethargic..etc to ring them straight back and bring her in.

As i am finishing my phonecall with the nurse...and my breathing was returning to normal !!...nurse is asking me "how does she seem now".......

I look down to see honey performing triple spins around my feet..chasing her ball....to which i reply to nurse "think she is going to be fine"

Panic over !!...need to get myself a drink

Re: Honeys first hairball ???

Ah, I remember to this day when I was a kid and my first cat was trying to bring up her first hairball. I seem to be lucky with my currently lot. They hardly ever seem to suffer hairballs.

Have you considered growing some kitty grass?

Oh Yes, I also remember the first time I saw this...I seriously thought the cat was dying in front of my eyes!

Yes, that was hilarious! I think only cat owners can really really appreciate this though!

Re: Honeys first hairball ???

You can also try something to help the furball 'pass'. My vet gave me laxapast and after a few days Freya stopped retching so guess it went the other way maybe your vet can recommend you something similar?

Hi Merothe

Was Freya sick at all when she was retching?

Only becuase my boy BSH has been sick a couple of times recently and has been retching as well. I took him to the vet this morning, who seems to think it's the raw food I give him that makes him ill. However, he just retched and spat out some saliva which seems to have some of his fur in it?

Ahh, now you have experienced a common problem here....unfortunately once you have mentioned raw feeding, a lot of vets will blame every single thing on the food. Many people actually end up lying to their vet about what they feed just so they can be taken seriously!
Obviously you want to keep an eye on this, but I would certainly try some hairball remedies...cat grass or special treats...to see if this calms things down.
You could also try adding small amounts of Lecithin ( egg based is best) to his raw mix as this helps the digestion of hairballs

Yea...I told him he'd been being sick...he checked him over and said how healthy he was and then as soon as I mentioned the R word, 'oh that's why he's sick then.!'. Helpful.

Anyway I've been told to starve him today and give some prescription diet stuff for a couple of days from tomorrow.

Just that retching thing, makes me so upset to see! You think I'd be used to it by now, having grown up around persians but no! It's still horrid!
