Post Neutering

I rang my vets today to make an appointment to have the 2 5 month old kittens neutered. 1 is still for sale, but has started showing interest in the girls already and I don't want him mating any of them, especially his mam, the other we were keeping as a show neuter anyway.
Well the usual lady was'nt on the desk, so I explained all this to her. "Ok", she said, "when do you want" ? I said "as soon as possible next week please". he said "ok i''ll look". Then said "well i'll make one nearer to them being 6 months".....I said "no I would like them done now". "Oh", she said again "it should be 6 months". I said "well sorry but quite a lot of breeders do them before they are 13 weeks, so it can't be a problem". "Oh", she said, "well Monday then"!.

My question is.....have any of you had similar problems, when trying to get your cats neutered before 6 months ?

Did you explain to her that you have had this done with the vet there previously with other litters and that you would like to speak to the vet or practice manager?

it's annoying when some one new on the desk doesn't know the routine and upsets the regular clients. But it helps if you clarify with them and let them know this is something you have done before if you have. Not all vets do early spay/neuters and if there is a locum vet working you might find they won't do it unless they are comfortable with it.

Re: Neutering

Most practices I have worked at prefer to neuter around six months but its more depending on the size of the cat than the age.
As everything is so much smaller it does make the op more difficult especially with the females. And its surprising how much more complicated it can be as sometimes the ovaries etc are not easy to find in a small kitten. And the anaesthetic can be more risky.
Personally I wouldnt have a cat neutered untill it was 6 months unless it was a big breed (or a male with a big pair)!!!, but thats just my opinion.

Re: Neutering

There should be no reason wny either sex cannot be neutered well before 6 months. It does seem that many UK vets don't seem to realise this - however "early neutering" has been done in many other countries for the last 30 years or so, with no adverse effects. I'm very lucky in that my vet is happy to neuter my kittens at 12 weeks onwards - I usually have them done at 13-14 weeks. I've done this for over 5 years now with great results - they just recover amazingly quickly and of course the new owner doesn't have to worry about getting it done.

early neutering is actually less complicated from what i've heard. it's more hear say and personal pref of the vets as the clients can be funny about it

Shes not new, she is one of the miserable ones from the main practice. For some reason they don't like you to tell them what you'd like done. If that makes sense. The normal lady is fine about anything i'd like done with my cats She just says well you know your cats better than anyone
I agree with you KoztKats, it seems they are very reluctant to neuter/spey before 6 months. I have been considering getting kittens done before they go to homes and they were'nt keen on it at all.

The procedure is exactly the same no matter what age the cat is. Its just not always as easy to find everything as it can be allot smaller (not always) also due to the size of the tubes etc it its more fiddly, ok if you have a petite female vet but not so great if you have a huge male vet with big hands!!
