Smile Kitten or adult food?

Hiya all,

At the start of December I got a 6 month female kitten from a rescue home. She's settled in fine and eats regularly. But she's had a bit of a poorly tummy the last few days and I don't know if it's the food I've moved her to. She was on kitten pouches (Felix) but she didn't seem to like them all that much so I then moved her onto Whiskers kitten pouches. Again she never finishes her meals so I found myself throwing most of it away. I bought some adult tinned food from Lidls and she LOVES it! Eats it all and her dried food (which is whiskers kittens dry) but I'm wondering if this is causing the upset tummy. By upset tummy I mean very soft, smelly poos about 2 to 3 times a day, not diarreah but close enough, and wind. Should I move her back to the kitten food that she doesn't eat or maybe try a different brand of adult food.

Thanks for any replies in advance!

Libby and a rather smelly kitten Lilly

Re: Kitten or adult food?

Hello and welcome to the pf! Unlikely that the smelly poos are the result of you not feeding your girl kitten but adult food (really not much difference between the two but when differences exist then kitten food tends to be more calorific)

Most likely it is that particular brand of food that doesn't agree with her (but could also be the Whiskas dry). When you moved her unto the new food, did you do it gradually? If you did, then I would try to find a new food for her. But again, remember to introduce the new food gradually to avoid stomach upsets.

Oh, and get your hands on some pro-kolin or fortiflora, which help a kitten/cat with loose stools the natural way.

Re: Kitten or adult food?

I'm also having a 'mare with smelly poos mine were also on felix kitten and I'm blaming that.

I have one now with solid poo and not smelly yay. The vet gave him some diarsanyl and it did settle his tummy and has also stopped him pooping all over the house! yay!. I'm now getting him slowly onto hi-life because it's super cheap at the moment at Home bargains. He is on about 3/4 hi-life and a little bit of felix each day with dried food. If they stop doing that on special I will try toplife.

Kitten 2 - more of a problem. Any tiny change to his food was giving him even smellier poo (which I didn't think was possible!!) so I moved him back totally on to the felix pouches and then made the discovery that even on the felix if he eats fish cat food his poo is far far worse!!

So I've started feeding him chicken, poultry and beef pouches, no fish and he is a bit loose still but an awful lot better than it was. Also am giving some pro kolin. He seems totally happy in himself though, although the other night he pooed and it was that stinky that he just looked disgusted and ran away which had me in such fits of laughter that I think the neighbours may think I'm a crazy woman.

The vet has looked at my boys toilet issues when she did their vaccinations and didn't charge extra for that so if you have vaccinations or anything like that coming up it might be worth a mention it's given me peace of mind!

Re: Kitten or adult food?

Hi,

thanks for that. I think it might be the cheap Lidls food that has done it. I did move her to it very quickly! Even though she enjoys eating it I'm going to try and move her back to whiskers kitten pouches.

She's had all her vaccinations and been spayed a few weeks ago so not going to have a chance to ask the question. Might try the pro kolin though, see if that helps.

thanks for your help!

It may not be the food not agreeing with her, just that the transition was too quick. If you want to move her to a different just add increasing amounts of the new food to her old food over a period of a week or two, starting with a very small amount, like a teaspoon-full.

Re: Kitten or adult food?

We've had better kitten poops since changing their food to Butchers Classic. Previusly they were on Whiskas kitten pouches. Classic is cereal free and I wondered whether that had anything to do with it.
